Potty Training Setback - Downers Grove,IL

My son turned 3 in Feb, and we've spent the last couple of months working on potty training. In the last month, I'd say he was definitely doing amazingly well. He would tell us when he needed to go, was able to pull down his underpants, and go to the potty. We could take him anywhere, and he would go on a public toilet with no problem. However, in the last 3 or 4 days, he has totally lost interest. He will not use the potty at all. We're still putting him in underpants, but he just pees in them. Is this just a normal rebellion about the potty training? Should I put him back in diapers or just keep cleaning up the mess? I really don't mind cleaning it up if it means he'll get back into it. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I am no expert, but my advice would be to leave him in underwear. I've also heard that you should have them take responsibility and have them clean up the mess. (Of course you have to clean it up too to make sure). I haven't done that but have heard from several that it helps.
Good Luck!

Hi Amanda,
I feel your pain. I have a 3 1/2 yr old son and he is pretty much doing the same thing. He was doing well in the begining and then just out of the blue started having accidents ALL the time. I actually put him back in diapers and he was fine with that (which I was hoping for a different response). I just put him back in his big boy underpants after a few days in the diapers and he is doing much better. I use M&M's for a incentive and it seems to work well. Now I have a problem with his twin Sister who has been doing great the last 6 mths+ and all of a sudden she is having tons of accidents.
Can't wait for this phase to be over.

Hope I have helped.. atleast u know that your not alone:)

Like the other moms said, keep with it. Set backs are pretty normal, but don't give up. When I was training my daughter we went for days w/o accidents, then, in ONE DAY, I had to change her clothes 7 times. I would not go back to the diapers. I used the plastic pants that are lined on the inside with a diaper-like cloth(I found them at Babies R Us). They are great because they keep the majority of the mess inside without absorbing too much. It sounds a bit cruel, but I think being uncomfortable helps get the point across.
Best of luck, and remember he wont go to college in diapers!

Amanda-

My son turned 3 in November and I sort of had this same problem. I simply told my son (who is in daycare) that I would give his brand new underpants to Evan (a child in his class) and that just put over the top! I also gave him incentives (Mathbox cars .99 cents) Worked like a charm! I know it sounds cruel to threaten them or bribe them but it worked! I hope this helps!

Good Luck to you!
