Hi Mom's. So my almost 3 yr old son won't go pee on the potty. He is more than happy to sit on it and read books, talk or whatever, but won't actually use it. Take this morning for example. He woke up with a dry diaper, so I thought 'now's my chance'!! We went and sat on the potty for 30+ min-....nothing. Then I put his pull up on and 10-15 min later I checked him and it was soaking wet. This same thing happened the other day after nap time. I have him sit on the potty several times a day, for the past several days, but he is yet to go. He doesn't complain about sitting on the potty and I check with him to see if he wants to get up, because I don't want to make it a bad experience. But I don't know how to actually get him to go ON the potty. I know once he does, he'll catch on fast, but getting to that point is proving to be difficult. Any ideas?? Thanks.

What can I do next?

ok i had the same problem with my son when we started to potty train but what really helped him along was just ditching the pull-ups during the day. We made a special trip to the store he helped pick out his big boy pants and it took about 2 days of just underwear and lucky we did trained in the winter so oversized sweat pants. With the underwear he could actually feel the pee when he went unlike the pull ups which are alot like diapers. So he could make the connection of what it feels like before he goes and when he actaully goes. We would use the pullups at night but he always woke up dry so after a week or so he would wear his underwear to bed. Also i know with my son in the morning it is about 20 mins or so after he gets up before he heads to the potty not as soon as he wakes up. Good luck with the training.

My son kept going in his undies the first two days he was being potty trained too. To get him over the hump, we sat him on his potty and let him watch a dvd while we gave him a lot of liquids (to make him need to go). it took about an hour, but he did go IN the potty and its like the light bulb went off and he knew that it was okay to go in the potty and that he could do it. i think the dvd helped take the pressure off of him and he just went like he would in a diaper, he just happened to be sitting on the potty. anyway, it helped him to feel comfortable peeing in the potty and of course we made a HUGE deal out of it, so he'd be excited to do it again. it only took one day of this, and then we could move the potty into the bathroom. he was fully potty trained within 4 days. he is 27 months.

i hope this helps

My only suggestion is to keep doing what you're doing and one day soon he'll catch on. You're on the right track. You might try giving him a cup of water to drink while he's on the potty or running water in the sink or tub. Sometimes hearing the sound of running water helps.

He is having performance anxiety. Give time time, be his biggest cheerleader, tell him that 'tomorrow" we will get the pee in the potty. He will do it, you just have to keep at it. But if he is going right after, then it's performance anxiety.

Is he an only child? If he doesn't have an older brother or sister to imitate, then it's natural to take him a little while as my first son did. No problem, just continue putting him on th the potty- great practice for him to get used to it. It will come. No rush. Relax. The way to get him to go pee (you always work on pee first- much easier for kids to learn-poop comes later) is to have him drink a glass of juice, water etc., then for the next hour, take him the potty and have him stand there to attempt going. Has daddy modeled repeatedly peeing on the potty? Get him used to seeing that often, drink often, then try peeing. Good luck!
