Potty Training Advice for a Boy

Does anybody have any words of wisdom for potty training a 25 month old boy. My pediatrician said the average boy now learns at 3.5 years. I am a stay at home Mom with only him and have another one the way due in Jan. I was hoping not to have 2 in diapers. He walks up to his little potty and the big toilet and imitates his Daddy, but doesn't grasp when I ask him to tell me when he needs to potty. We have started flushing his bowel movements as well, and he tells them bye bye! Any advice on how you successfully did it or how long it took? Did you have luck with the training pants that indicate when he needs to urinate? To be honest, potty training has been the most over whelming issue I have come across since being a Mother - I just really do not know how to approach it. Am I just being silly?

What can I do next?

Honestly, I'd rather have 2 in diapers than 1 in diapers and 1 that I have to constantly clean poop out of underwear... It takes me 1-2 minutes to change a 2 yr old diaper--and less when she wears pull ups.... It would take me much longer to clean up urine/feces in clothes, upholstery, floors, cars, etc. and try to launder the associated clothing stains...

If he isn't ready, then you're trying to swim upstream against the current.

On the other hand, diapers aren't cheap. There is always the financial cost of having 2 in diapers... Consider it a luxury (not a headache) if you can afford it.

Potty training girls is much easier than boys. My daughter was train by 18 months and taught herself. My son was nearly 3 before I got him trained. But we used big boy undies, I let him pick out the ones he wanted form the store, then got home and let him put some on he thought it was neat. I would place cheero or fruitloops in the tolet for him aim and and he thought it was fun to try and drown the cerial. But if he pooped in his new under ware I made him throw them in the trash and warned him that if he kept pooping in his undies he would have to ware baby diapers again and not big boy pants. I spent about two weeks cleaning pee off the couch and threw out about 10 pair of underware before he got the point. But we made it threw it and so will you.

Incase you have a girl, with my daughter, she was always in the bathroom with me and saw me going, so she taught herself. The first day I found her in the bathroom sitting on the potty "I go pee by self mommy" I told her I was proud of her and went to the store right away and let her choose pretty panties, and she rarely had a accident after. She didn't want to mess up her pretty lacy panties.

You are not being silly . Potty training is tough. My little boy was solidly potty trained when he was a little older than 3. My daughter was trained by 2.5, but regressed when her brother came along. I used pull ups for them when the turned 2. Both learned to poopy in the potty much earlier than to pee.My youngest is 21 months and shows no sign of wanting to potty train. I would say, don't sweat having 2 in diapers at once. Believe me, that will be the very least of your concerns when you have two little ones! (I have 3, ages 1.5, 4 and 6) It all falls into place.

I am in the midst of potty training my two year old son. There are days that are better than other. What I have done:

He wore pullups that turned cold in the front when he started to go. It made him realize something was going on down there. I also started to put him on the potty on a regular basis. When he went in the toilet, he got a treat which I kept in the bathroom cupboard for instant reward. He also got to put a sticker on the potty chart if he hadn't gone in his pants before going on the potty. When he got the chart full, we bought "big boy underwear like daddy" for him. Now he wears the underwear during the day and still does the sickers for new rewards. He is still having accidents, but is going through less underwear a day. We put in on the potty regulary if he hasn't asked to go.

I understand about the 2 in diapers thing. I have a 2 month old son as well.

Good luck.
