The first time is so exciting especially for the parents, and the excitment may be overwhelming, he may be a little young yet BUT there are lots and lots of books and videos to read and show him that may ease his fears: My kids read Elmo's Potty Time and watched Bear and the Big Blue House. Make sure the potty is the right size and that he can sit on it himself. My 23 month old boy carries his very small potty around from room to room with him but his older sister who didn't train till she was almost 3 was totally fine with the regular toilet. I hope this helps a little, but I wouldn't push him if he is genuinely scared, he has plenty of time to grow a bit in size and maturity.

Just in my experience with my own son, 21 months is a little young to really "get it". Again this is just in my own situation, but I introduced the potty to my son at 18 months, I would put him on at bath time and just let him use it when he wanted. I wouldnt force him. My son didnt get fully potty trained until 3 years old. He will eventually get over his fear, just take your time and sit him on it a few times a day.

My son would go on the potty, then he wouldnt and then he would and so on...It was always a back a fourth thing until he finally got in down.

Just keep offering and he'll come around. Don't force it or you'll do more harm than good.

Just let it go for now. My mom used to say that anyone who bragged about how young their kid was trained had usually trained themselves to put the kid on the potty when it was time, not really trained the kid. This has to be on his terms, so just wait awhile.

Give him some time away. Few babies will train that young, and many that do will eventually regress for a few weeks or months. But especially if he's gotten scared, just leave it alone for a few months. He'll probably forget his fear, and you can start fresh when he shows interest, which he will, when he's ready. For boys that generally happens somewhere between 2.5 and 4 years, when their physical and nerve development allow them to recognize urges and hold the pee till they make it to the potty.
