Hi I was wondering if anyone has had any luck w/potty training early? My son is 16months old and we thought we would try sitting on the potty. The first time he just sat there but each time since then he has actually peed when we put him on there. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to do next? I dont think he understands the whole process yet so how do you explain the whole big boy pants thing? Any tips would be great. Thanks

What can I do next?

We did the same thing with my daughter at 14 months. I had sisters who decided to start their kids later when they would understand the whole potty thing and it became a control issue. Their kids were not trained until they were 3 1/2 and 4 years old. So I liked they idea of starting before they knew it could be used for a battle and it worked. By time my daughter was 16 months she was trained thru the night. We would put her on the potty with a book and everytime she went she received lots of praise and maybe a little treat. We put her in underwear and she only had a few accidents and realized she didn't like being wet.
Good luck.

That sure is a lot of pressure for a 16 month old! In my opinion (and the Academy of Pediatrics), children are ready to potty train between 2 - 3 years old and will show ALL of the signs of being ready, not just one! Otherwise, you are expecting too much from someone who has no cognitive understanding of what you are asking of him.

I have a 16 month old daughter who now tells us she has a dirty diaper and wants to be changed. She also shows interest in the big potty when the other kids use it. She is starting to show one or two signs of readiness, but until she shows ALL of them, I do not intend to put her and US through the dramatic experience of potty training.

What's the harm of her being my little girl a bit longer?

Try using Daddy as an example. Daddy does not mess his pants. If he does mess his pants make sure you act like the nasty pants are sooooooooo icky. hold your nose and the whole nine yards, be dramatic. Don't forget to add in a few no, no's to your drama. Most libraries have animated potty training video's for kids and matching books. You might want to look into that also. That's about all I can tell you to do. It worked with mine. Good Luck.

Hi!
My daughter was trained by 17 months (during the day!) A few months later she was trained at night, too. I actually wasn't trying to train her early, she was the one who initiated it! She would take off her diapers if she went in them. After that I just started putting her in underwear (I bypassed the whole pull ups) Although,it is hard to find underwear to fit those little behinds! Very luckily, she was on the potty within a week & 1/2. She had a few accidents, but with the underwear they feel it more than the absorbant diapers so it motivates them more to not go in them. You can also put a plastic diaper over the underwear to keep from making a mess all over your floor. While training her, I took her and put her on the potty every hour to show her that's where to go. She would go maybe every other time we went. Also, keep a close eye if he just had a drink, you can almost time when he'll go if you have a routine. My son (who's 4 now) was trained at 2 years. With him, we didn't start trying until we thought he was ready. He did the same thing, took off his diaper right after he peed. We used pull ups with him, and he was trained in about 2 weeks. It really helps to go every hour so they get the idea.
I hope that helps, & Good luck!! : )

The earliest I have heard of successful potty training is 19 months... I guess if he is ready (they have check lists for this online) then go go go! Don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen though. Most moms I talk to have their sons potty trained somewhere around the age of three (2 1/2- 3 1/2), and even then there are accidents.

In my personal opinion, 16M is too young. My son also would sit on the potty when he was close to 18M. He actually did pee-pee in there, too. But it was coincidence. I'm not saying to just chalk it up and forget about it, but I wouldn't expect too much from him or be disappointed if he doesn't become potty trained this young.

There are all sorts of methods available out there, so if you are really looking into trying to do this, I'd Google it and find a couple of books that sound like what you are looking for.

Good luck!

Keep in mind that 3 years is the AVERAGE age of potty training, so you don't expect too much. I too would surely not push it at all, but have the potty available and gently encourage him as he desires. I'd not do the big boy undies until he's trained, so it's not a pressure or thing that needs to be explained, but rather natural progression to no need for a diaper anymore. As you've seen, it's pretty common for kids to "show an interest" at this age and doesn't necessarily mean they will be trained before age 2, as they show interest in all kinds of things adults do, like cleaning and such that they also don't master for quite a while. So could be on the early end of the spectrum in learning, or might not be, just go with the flow and see how it goes without pushing. We've done fruit snacks (one piece) or Yogos (again one piece) for a potty treat when they actually go pee on the potty along with all the excited verbal praise. They like it more for getting a treat than what the treat actually is, I think. :) With being on the young end of the spectrum, the process is usually longer, but smooth so long as you don't push it. Best wishes!

My advice would be to go to the library and check out all the parenting resources you can find. Videos and books. I can't remember which video I watched but it was by an "expert" and he said that most children aren't fully ready until about 27 months. Whatever you do, PLEASE realize that even though your son is showing signs of readiness that potty training can take months or even another year to learn, especially since he is so young. My daughter started to tell us she was wet or went poo poo from time to time when she was about 2. Then at 27 months I did what you are doing. Just sat her on the potty (sometimes she would go sometimes not) and praised her for it. From time to time I would put her in panties around the house after she went. We would talk about them and she knew they were for big girls who don't wear diapers. She had plenty of accidents and I admit, I wasn't always patient. But then just one day OUT OF NO WHERE (about 9 months later!)she stood dry for a long time. Then we put her on the potty and she went. She continued this pattern of being dry so we knew she was trying to hold it to avoid being wet. That's when the potty training took off and in about a few weeks after that point she was trained. Accidents aren't a part of potty training;they are a part of a kids life- period :) So, please be patient and wait for more signs and go with them. I know it's such a confusing time but he will show you!! Good luck!
