How can I get my 3 year old son to "poop" in the toilet? He'll pee with no problem, but absolutely refuses to go poop and soils his pants!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the helpful tips from all the moms! I'm utilizing a bit of everyone's advice here and there. Some, I have attempted in the past, but the one thing I've learned is the true test of patience! We are making strides with the potty training and once we've accomplished it I will keep everyone posted. Be well to all!

When my son seemed to have no problem using the toilet to pee but refused to poop in it, I had him clean his own pants whenever he soiled them. He also had to change his own clothes. After about a week of this he pooped in the potty with no problem.

Be patient - no pressure. Tell him he can have a pull up or diaper when he has to go but NOT to go in his pants! (I did the arguing 19 years ago with my oldest)...this worked with my 3 1/2 year old..he was bored with pullups in a couple months and has been good ever since!

M.,
My sis-in-law had the same issue with my niece. She invented the "Brown Book." Basically a sticker book, and when she pooped in the potty and got so many stickers, she would get special rewards (if s-i-l knew they were going to visit Grandma and Grandpa, or a trip to Seaworld was coming up sometime soon, THOSE would be the next rewards. . . the rewards all depend on what drives your child).

Good Luck!

My 3-year old just got poop trained about 2 months ago and the way I "convinced" him was by telling him that he could not go to school until he was poopooing in the pot, and he really wanted to go to school. He trained himself rather quickly. Is there anything that your child wants to do but can't because of not being all trained?

Maybe a reward system of some sort--like stickers or a special snack. Kids have their own little minds at this age adn simetimes it is so hard for us to figure out why they do things the way they do. Good luck and I wish I had a better suggestion for you! Congrats on the new one on the way!

Try explainig to him what Big Boy Pants are (regular underwear)....Let him know as soon as he starts pooping on the big potty, he gets to wear big boy panties,,,buy him a few pairs, and let him decorate them with markers or water based paints.....and tell him when he poops he gets to wear his special big boy underwear!! Good Luck....

I recently went through this. What I did was when I knew he was about to go potty (poopy) I ran him to the bath and made him is on the potty. I even gave him a picture book to look at. And when he was done, whether he did anything or not, we all appluaded and made him feel like he was a big boy. It worked for us, so good luck with you.
