Ok..Here it the question......Do I use pull-ups, which do not bio-degrade but are very convienient..OR do I use cotton training pants which are better for the environment but not as convienient. I would like some feedback from mom's who have used both..
Thank you all.
I have found with my own children that pull ups were just like putting them in diapers and it was harder to potty train! I used regular underwear unless we were going out of the house then I used a pull up! I showed my children what it felt like to feel wetness in their underwear and they didn't like that feeling and it was easier to potty train

Dont fall in to the pull up trap! They are just prolonging the training Ive found. Use regular underwear and if you are worried about the mess buy the old fashioned rubber pants to go on the outside of their underwear... works much faster!

I also used cotton training pants. What also helped her was cloth diapers. She learned very early what "wet" felt like and potty trained at 15 mo. I only used pullups for travel or at times when she in other's care. Good Luck!

Pull-ups end up being just like a regular diaper and they don't learn as quickly. They are, however, great when you go out. Better than having to clean up a mess somewhere!!

I found that Pull-ups are more of a hinderance than a help. Stick with underwear. Even when going out, unless you will be gone a very long time, avoid pull-ups. We used them for bedtime for quite awhile. But, now we've even given up on that. He just will not go in the toilet when he knows that he's wearing a pull-up.

HI C., You may not have a choice to use the pull-ups. We tried them with our granddaughter and the chemical that is in pull-ups which is different from a regular diaper is harsh on very sensitive skin. Just one day of use of the pull-ups she had a bad rash, we discontinued them and it went a way. However just to make sure it wasn't something she ate we tried the pull-ups again. The rash reaappeared. Unfortunetly, the rash made our little one hurt and now she doesn't care to potty train so we have to give her time to realize the regular cotton training pants won't do that. And to help her along we talk about how the cotton training paints are for the big girls. The cotton training pants are better for the summer because they allow the skin to breath better, and really once you do the intense potty training for 3 days accidents become far and few between so they really are not to much of an inconvienient. Good luck with the potty training and just a quick FYI there is a little video from elmo that teaches little ones potty training can be fun. Have a nice day.

We started with cotton training pants. We used them for about a month, but my daughter just seemed to be constantly wetting her pants. She did NOT want us to put her back in diapers, but she would fight if we tried to take her potty. She was going through clothes faster than I could wash them. We had to switch her to pull-ups. I have heard that kids will potty train faster if you use the cotton training pants, because they get embarrassed when their clothes get wet, but it was just not working for us. Then again, we don't really have a potty training success story, either. I have been trying to potty train my daughter for over a year now. She was doing really well, and then I had another baby, and it was like she "relapsed." Somebody told me that she is jealous that she is not the baby anymore, so she is acting like a baby by wetting her pants. The bottom line is that you do what works for you, and be prepared for accidents.

I used cotton panties with rubbers over them. We tried pull ups but they keep them from feeling wet so its actually just like a diaper. It only took about a week of regular panties and she was trained. Just for a while remember to remind them to go in and try. The pull ups that go cool can irritate bottoms too.

I never used pull-ups. My theory was that they are much pricier than regular diapers but do the same thing as a diaper. They absorb the urine too quickly ad the only thing that they are teaching the child is the concept of pulling on and off a underwear type garment. Now they have the pull-ups that are supposed to give the child a cool sensation when they wet. These might be better, but personally, I would not waste the money!

we use cloth with our daughter and it works wonderfully. if you can invest in some nice cloth diapers it will be worth it because they last a long time and are so much better for the environment. diapers take up 80% of our landfills. thats a pretty staggering number. you can check out happyheiny.com, bummis.com and fuzzibunz.com. its great that youre being open minded about an issue a lot of people wouldnt even think twice about anymore.

Hi C.,
I have a three year old girl who is potty training and we go back and forth with the cotton training pants and pull ups. I find that she uses a lot less pull ups now because of the potty training and some days, will go all day without an accident in the cotton underpants. I say, just encourage your kid to go on the potty about every 45 minutes and offer incentives. She goes on her own all the time now and wants to wear the cotton underpants more than pull ups now.
Good luck to you, whatever you do.

For me the pull-ups didn't work. My daughter still wet thru those. But what I did find are liner to put in the cotton panties or even the pantied that have the plastic liner built in(you can get those at Meijers) The liners I use are for adult undergarments, They cost about $5.00 a bag of 20 at Walmart, but they work!! They look like a large sanitary napkin.I have used them in her diapers also. But i wouldn't waste my money on any type of pull-up.

Well I am not sure about other mom's but I found Pull Ups really did not work that well for me. The only time they were convenient was when we were out in public. I quickly realized with my kids that Pull Ups were a more expensive type of diaper for my kids. I just started by putting them on the potty first thing and kept putting them on the potty every 20 mins or so. In the meantime I put them in big kid underpants with their favorite character on them. It works if you are a stay at home mama and have the patience to clean up accidents...like you would with a new puppy...only 100% more rewarding when it is accomplished. One a side note...it seemed to me that neither gender was easier to train. I have both and one daughter was not trained until almost four and my two year old daughter is currently trained. My oldest son was potty trained by three and out of diapers even at night at three, by my three year old son..he is just now starting the process! I will be sooo glad to be finally out of diapers!

I potty trained two kids with just regular old training pants.. I hate pull ups, they are bad for the environment and they are basically still diapers. My kids were both trained within a month of starting potty training. the regular cotton training pants are better cuz they can FEEL when they are wet. Just invest in a couple pairs of plastic pants to go over the training pants when you have to go out. It is more work for mom to use these but I found it is worth it.

We have five children and I have to say that if you are serious about potty training and your child is ready, don't waste your time and money on Pull-Ups. I would use the underwear. The Pull-Ups are too much like a diaper and they still use them like a diaper. Going back and forth will only confuse them. The underwear is very messy, but it gets the job done quicker. The won't like the feel of going in their pants. I have one left to potty train and I will only use underwear. I do use Pull-Ups at bedtime, but that's only until they are waking up dry for a month and then underwear it is! Good Luck!

I used cloth diapers, so cloth training pants were pretty much a given. It isn't just the environmental factor, but cloth is easier for them feel when they wet, cheaper and is an easier transisition to regular underwear. While at home, I let them run around in just the cloth training pants, that way, we didn't have to change clothes. While out in public, I bought some leak proof covers that pull up like underwear, that are used as diaper covers, that way if they had an accident, it didn't get all over. Good luck, potty training is so much fun, ha ha ha!

I used both and to be honest buy as many cotton training pants as you can because you will go through them. My son wore the pull ups (the cool sensation) and they worked for about 10 minutes, then he lost interest and could care less if he got cold. The urine still pulls away from them like a diaper so they don't really learn. Besides they don't hold very much pee (for night time) so they end up peeing right out of them just like the cotton ones. My son potty trained very fast with the cotton ones. Yes, they are very innconvienient but effective. Good luck.

Hello, I potty trained my son with help and found out that Pull ups are like diapers, they didn't work that well for me, I finally put underwear on my son and had him go potty weather he had to go or not every 1/2 hour just so he'd get the idea, once you have established he can go on the toilet move back the time, like have them go every hour. It takes alot of patience but it works. He still has accidents but it's not to bad at all. He'll go in to the bathroom for the most part and he's 3 now.

my son is 2 1/2 and we are currently working on potty training him, I personally use regular underware with plastic training pants over them around the house, he has had a few accidents but it's not a real big deal cuz you are home and can just throw them in the washer. but when we go places we put on pull ups (actually the off-brand) Most of the time he does okay and his pull up stays dry, but there have been a few cases when he would not use the potty at what ever place we were at, I even have a folding potty seat to make the hole smaller but he was still to scared to even try. But my son is not having to much trouble with switching back and forth between the two. good luck

Use the pull-ups.... I suggest the Huggies Cool Alerts. My daughter was trained in less then 2 weeks. I think its a great product as for the environment there are worse things out there!
If you start something like letting them run free as somone else said, you might start something and they might want to run free outside your home so I would think twice. Cool alerts did not irritate her bottom either, cause whatever she felt she ran to the potty and went on the potty!!
C. remember all little ones are assembled differently!
Good luck

I think it depends on how old your child is. With my son, we started at about 2 1/2 and he wore underpants at home and pull ups when we went places. I think that pull ups aren't as helpful because they are so absorbent that kids can't tell if they are starting to get wet.
If you are willing to do a bit of extra laundry, try skipping the pull ups at home

My daughter is 5 now and she took forever to potty-train! I partly blame the pull-ups, i guess they still feel too much like a diaper. I finally had had it and only put underwear on her, within a couple of weeks, she was having no more accidents. Before i was using both. So, i would'nt even waste your money on them. I'd buy some underwear w/ your child's fav. character and some of the plastic underwear to go over it. Take your child to the bathroom often and reward them when they do it!!! Good luck!!

I would go with underwear. I started potty training my daughter with pull ups and as most of the other moms say no such luck. She would still wet them. So I started to use underwear and I swear she peed in her pants 2 times and never did it again. She peed once on the back porch with the hole family there and once in her bed, I think once they get to see the effect, they can start understanding. Kind of like cause and effect.
Good luck,

I have tried both with my daughter. The pull-ups are more convienient and easy to clean up if they have an accident but my daughter seemed to learn faster with the old fashioned training pants. She was in the pull ups that "felt wet" for a few months with not a whole lot of progress in her training. We switched her to training pants and she started going more often on the potty with less accidents.
We do put her in pull ups if we're are going to be out and about all day, just for easy changing if there is an accident. I stay at home full time so it was easy for me to use the training pants with her. Good luck!

I guess depending on how old your child is and whether your child is ready or not. My daughter is 2 1/2 and potty trained (and it has not always been easy) At first I thought I would do the cool thing and buy the cool pull ups and the newest cool alerts, but they really didn't work, If your child is okay going in a diaper, they'll be okay going in a pull up. One of the best things I did was use training pants and when we didn't have a busy night at home I would let her run free and I would put the potty chair in the living room, and she would use it every time. It took alot of patient talks and alot of asking do you have to go poddy, but it paid off. A lot of times too it helps to take them even if they say no. I would definitly say that pulls are a night time way to train or at least not get the bed all a mess (I would also suggest purchasing a bed liner).

When i start potty training i used underwear over a diaper. Just so that my kids got used to the feel of the underwear. Then while at home i used just the underwear once they started to use the potty. At night just so they dont wet the bed i used a pull up also if we were going somewhere for the first few weeks or so i would put a pull up on the just in case. I usually tried to find a potty as soon as we got there and encouraged them to go right away. It all depends on the way your child takes to potty training, but besides bedtime after the first few weeks i dont use pull ups at all.
