I really like this option and use it in my daycare.

My daughter decided last weekend to start using her little potty for both #1 AND # 2 (she was scared to go #2 on there for a long time)! She went all weekend with no accidents in her big girl undies. We are so proud of her! At home we use a little potty chair, a doctor once told me that it is easier for them to go #2 on the little potty chairs (as opposed to the regular toilet with or without a potty seat) because they are touching the floor with their feet and that helps them relax and push. I knew I hadn't seen one at our daycare, so I called to see if she wanted me to bring ours over. She said she never uses those because it's disgusting to clean the #2 out of them. I guess all the other kids just perch on her regular toilet, because she doesn't have a little potty seat to insert in the toilet. She said she would get a potty seat for the toilet next weekend. My questions are: Is it ok that I brought our potty chair over (I disinfected it and cleaned it first) and is it ok to expect her to let my daughter use it, even though she said she prefers the potty seat? What should I tell her if she gets a potty seat and says we can bring the potty chair home now? I am not sure my daughter will go #2 on the potty seat, and I don't want her to hold it all day (she did that yesterday and went as soon as we got home). I am really interested in the 'daycare mom's' opinions on this, I dont want to be one of those bossy neurotic moms...
Thanks!
Thanks for your responses. Our daycare provider made it clear that she would use the potty chair only until she got a chance to buy a potty seat. In the meantime it was VERY clear to everyone that she was not happy about it (in fact, my daughter told me as she was using our potty seat at home: "_____ doesn't LIKE the potty chair"). We've all heard the saying "If Mama ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy", and I think this applies at an in-home daycare as well, so I worked with my daughter to use the potty seat at our house and once she was comfortable with it I bought a fun colorful Dora seat for her to bring to daycare and use, and she was excited to use it. All is going well and she has not had an accident for the entire 2 weeks of being potty trained! But she does wear and wet a pull-up at night, not sure when that will stop(?). Thanks again.

i don't have in home day care but i do watch other children during the day. and i feel if the parent wants to bring the potty chair in for their child to use so be it. i'm being paid by the parent to watch and help their child to learn whatever. right now i have a 2 year old girl that wants to start training and loves to sit on the big toilet with the little seat. so that's my job. i know you may like the day care your child is in but remember you are their employer and can look for another day care that will work with you!!
My little guy potty trained this last weekend to. Our daycare doesn't have potty chairs wither they just have child size toilets, however when I approached my daycare and asked them if it was alright to bring in a potty chair they said it was more work but they would be glad to let him use it if he was more comfortable with it. I can honestly say that I have come and he has been sitting on the potty chair, so I know he uses it. Mabey just approach it with the fact that if she has to hold it all day it could lead to medical problems as well as accidents in undies and does she really want that mess to clean up. Congrats on not having to buy diapers any more.
Hi Allison,
I have mixed feelings on this subject. I don't use a potty chair at my house either, and I'm not sure what I would say if one of my Mom's asked me to bring theirs, BUT here is something you need to think about...your little one will someday need to go potty when a little potty chair is not available...when you go shopping, travel, or visit friends and family, so maybe it would be a good idea for your daughter to not use a potty chair at the daycare provider's home, so that she will be use to going both ways. Just a thought, and so far, my children have had no problems, mainly because they aren't given a choice, and they see their friends using the big potty, so don't ever really think anything about it. I've never even had one of them ask, or act like they care, so if you don't put this thought in their head, they probably won't have a problem, because they will just go with the flow.
Good Luck!

I care for children in my home, though i have not dealt with this problem with the kids here yet i to have mixed feeling. I think that the training needs to be consistant once it is started and if the little one feels better on the small chair then i i would say that is the way to go, but being a provider it does take more time and effort and cleanup with the little potty chair. perhaps an agreement could be met that the chair will only be used until the pattern is established and then the little one will be transitioned to the big potty. The home daycare i worked in a few years ago didn't allow the little potty chairs. I think if one of my parents would ask me to use one, if they provided it i would willing to let the child use it for a short time, then move the regular toilet. It might actually be less trouble to start right from the big toilet especially if that is what all the other kids use.
I do inhome daycare and I prefer to use the potty chairs when kids are just starting to train. I would talk to your childs teacher and see if they would be willing to use a potty chair for at least a few weeks so you can work with you child on the big potty at home.
if the daycare is using the big potty make sure they have a foot stool that your daughter can rest her feet on to go #2 easier
I will admit that the potty chair is a little more work to clean but if it helps the child it is worth it.
When doing daycare, I never had a potty chair for the kids to use. Nor did any parents ask for their child to use one. When my oldest was in daycare, she trained on a toilet as well. I had a potty chair at home, but she never used it, only as a step stool (the cover closed and turned into a step stool).
One other person mentioned a good point. When your daughter is elsewhere such as, a store, restaraunt or someone elses house it may be a problem if she doesn't know how to use a big person toilet. My son had used the potty chair a little bit, but also used the toilet seat insert. He would FREAK out when we tried to get him to use a regular toilet without the insert when out shopping or eating out. We stopped using the insert at home and after a while it became second nature to him...
One quick suggestion if you do end up using a little potty (depending on the type of chair it is). If the bowl is removable, you could line the bowl with a plastic bag (like a Target bag), and the bag with the solids in it can be lifted out and thrown away.
Another suggestion for using the toilet but keeping the child balanced and comfortable - be sure to have a stool under the child's feet. Then they won't feel tippy and it helps while pushing out a BM.
