Postpartum Issues at Almost 6 Weeks

Hi moms. I hate to ask this on mamasource, but it's Sunday and I am desperate for an answer. I am out of town and plan to call my doctor tomorrow, but thought I'd go ahead and see if anyone would respond. My baby will be 6 weeks on Tuesday and I've all of a sudden started having some reddish/pink blood again. It had almost completely stopped and last night started red again. It's not a lot like I'm soaking pads, but it's there. I'm breastfeeding and opted not to take the pill because with my first daughter I had bleeding and I thought it was from the pill. Could it be that I am just having a period while I'm breastfeeding? It somewhat concerns me that it had almost quit and then started up again. Has this happened to anyone else?

What can I do next?

I had this too. I bled for almost 4 months, but not consistently. I would think it had FINALLY stopped and alas, there it would start up again. So, I think it is totally common so long as you are not soaking pads.

I too had periods while breastfeeding, although i didn't get my first one until 8 weeks postpartum, it's entirely possible that what you are experiencing is a period.

Good luck to you and I hope this makes you feel a bit better.

Absolutely normal.

It happened to me... your body just slows down for a while then picks back up... however, if you have a heavy bleed reoccurring for long periods of time, you need to call your doctor. But if this goes away, or lightens up, after a day or so, don't worry about it... it's completely normal.

It could be you are doing more (physically) than usual so it's causing your body to "work out" any more blood that might have been "trapped" in there...

It is most definately possible to have a period while you are breastfeeding. A friend of mine was breastfeeding and got pregnant when her baby was only 8 weeks old! Be careful. I would still call your doctor though, just for piece of mind if nothing else. With a 2 1/2 year old and a new born you have enough going on.

Unless you are passing large clots or in a severe amount of pain, I wouldn't worry too much. For me, the bleeding came & went for about 2 months before it finally tapered off.

It could be a period, but it's also not at all uncommon for post partum bleeding to stop, then start up again.

Hi G.,
I had a regular period with my son and I nursed him for over two years. I couldn't believe it!!! LOL>...So yeah, it is "normal" to have a period while breastfeeding, just not everyone does. And with my first two boys it didn't happen that way, but with the third, 10 years later, it did.
Congrats on the sweet new baby! ;)

Yes, you can have a period. All women are different...my first child...I had the afterbirth period for just about a full month. I breastfed for 9 months and had periods. My second child...I had a shorter period, breastfed for over a year, had periods that changed to gushers.
