Post-labor Pain Question

I was wondering if any other moms ended up with a pulled muscle in their abdomin after labor? I ended up having a c-section after three hours of pushing. And was back in the ER a week after coming home because I was still feeling sharp pains on my right side... It was right over my apendix, but they did many, many tests and only figured out that I had pulled a muscle and all I could do for it was take more pain meds and rest. I dont know if I pulled the muscle while pushing, or from attempting to move myself around while my lower half was immobolized... But either way... It's been just shy of a year, and I still dont feel like that muscle has fully healed. I hadn't noticed it hurting for a long while, but it seems to be achy and kinda tender again for now reason. Has anyone else experienced this? How long will it hurt?!

What can I do next?

Hi J., you may want to seek out a Chiropractor who can give you strengthening exercises as well as getting you aligned. It could be that muscle is so weak that it isn't taking much to irritate it. Being out of alignment can affect many things and muscles being a huge one. Align and rehab it!! Good Luck

OHHHHHHHHHH yea, I had almost the same thing happen to me 12 years ago. Are they sure it was a muscle? There are tendons in that area to and they take a little longer to heal but muscles can take a long time too. I am happy to say that it will go away, I think it took almost two years for me to feel like I wasn't going to pull it again by just sweeping the floor. There was always that funny little twinge for a while. I had two more kids ( no more c-sections though -yea!) and didn't have any more troubles with that muscle.
take care

I had the exact same thing happen to me also. With my second child 18 months ago, I wne through labor and pushing only to end up with an emergency c-section. About a week later was when that painful symptom occured on the right side. I could not even get out of a chair or hold my new baby with confidence! I went in and they did tests and and ultrasound of that area and determined it to be a pulled muscle or tendon.
Over time it eased and every now and then I have a pain. There was no solution for it, just take pain medication and rest. Not much help, I know.
I guess it is one of those things that never fully heal and are easily aggrivated.

Hey J.,

About a year after my c-section I had the same feeling... but it was a cyst on my ovary. My guess is that they would have seen that if you went in... they can be very painful. I went to my GYNO to get checked out because they are very familiar with the lower part of you, plus it is cheaper to go to them then the ER. If you have not talked to your OBGyn give them a call and ask their opinion, they may say come in and give you an ultrasound to see if they can find anything.

Otherwise if you have done that and it is just a muscle strain that is week find some simple exercises to do for that area. I would look for ones that don't put strain on the muscle, you may have to take it slow to get it back to full strength.

Good Luck... hope you figure it out!

I had two c-sections and after my second one I had the same exact thing. I thought maybe they stitched me up wrong or my insides were infected. I still don't know what happened. My surgery was across my stomach from left to right and the pain was on the far right side. Excruciating! I don't know about the pulled muscle theory. It was well over two years before that pain was gone, my son is almost 4 and every now and then when I sit up it hurts. However...I am in physical therapy for a back injury and they discovered scar tissue on that exact area and massaged it (and it realllllly hurt) but it feels better now. Look into that...they said that that scar tissue needs to be broken up so it doesn't fuse. Good luck.

Hi J.,
I have two kids and both were delivered vaginally. Ever since the birth of my first (3 and 1/2 years ago) I've had a pain in my left side. It gets better and then bad over and over again. It seems to act up more when I've been doing a lot of standing and/or cleaning. I exercise 3 to 4 times a week and that doesn't seem to affect it. I told my doctor about it a year ago and he did x-rays of my ribs. They showed nothing. I'm switching to a female doctor in June. I'm hoping she will be more helpful. Like you, I would love to figure out what it is!

J.,

I also had a c-section with my first and had lingering pain for almost a year after. Mine was scar tissue that had become hard and painful. If your scar is firm and not soft you can massage it (it takes a while and hurts) until it becomes soft again, then the pain will go away.

I hope this helps!

Go see a chiropracter. Your S/I is mostly likely out of alingment. If it is a muscle issue they can also try microcurrent to retrain the muscles to work properly. I had the same issue problem after an a couple hours pushing & an emergency c-section.
