Portable Air Conditioner

We live in an old farm house that does have central air but since there are no vents in any of the upstairs rooms the central air does nothing for the bedrooms. There is only one vent upstairs at all and that is in the hallway. The master bedroom has a AC unit in the wall but the other two rooms do not. It gets really toasty and humid here in the summer and I would like to find a couple of portable air conditioners for the other two bedrooms. Any suggestions? Does anyone have one that really works well in a small bedroom?

What can I do next?

We have a "portable" AC/heater that we use in our sunroom. Works great and actually cools the family room too. There are no air vents into the sunroom, but we have 2 in our family room. Our AC & heater would just be running almost all the time depending on the temp outside. I say "portable" because it needs a vent to vent outside. DH cut out a dryer vent like opening (if that makes sense) into the sunroom wall to the outside. It also has a timer on it so you can set it to run for so many hours then it turns off and it adjusts itself according to the temp you want to keep the room at.
It's an EdgeStar. I don't know where he got it but you can try to google it. I think it was in the $300 range if I remember correctly.

Just look online... places like Sears and Costco, has portable air conditioners.
Especially now that summer time is coming up.
And you can read the reviews of it, online.
So that, before you go to the store, you would have already done your research on it. Saving time.

we use a small (7000 btu or whatever the measurement is called) for our livingroom. WORKS GREAT! It was around 200$ and designed for a smaller room, but like I said its great. It is a window unit, but we made a stand of sorts for it, to use in the balcony door. The truly portable ones arent as strong, and where does the air & humidity go? I prefer the window one. (plus they are both stronger & cheaper.) I think they range from 4500-12000 btu (again not sure if thats what the measurement is called, but i think so.) Costco has some (higher quality & price), but we picked ours up at london drugs, a kind of super pharmacy, dont think they have those stores in the US.

whe had one at our old house and loved it. as long as your windows open up/down not side/to side you should be good. you will need a bucket to catch the humidity drops from the hose. just be sure to secure the window exhust part well, they do blow the hot air out with some force. I loved it bc I did not have to keep the curtians opened at the bottom like you would a window unit. also the screens can stay in place which means no bugs will be able to get in.

Have you thought about having someone come in and add ducts to get your AC to go to the bedrooms? It seems to me that would be the more cost efficient way to go. Your going to have the cost of the units and the added electricity. If the house is too old and you haven't had your electric lines updated in a while you may need to have someone come in to do that anyway to make sure it is safe to run a portable AC unit so you don't have a fire. Central air runs much more efficiently, you already have the unit, and it keeps a more constant temperature, not to mention that the cost to add ducts would be a one time thing vs additional electricity every year and the time to put them in and take them out every summer.
