Hi. It's funny that I am reading this! LOL My dad's a pediatrician and I have a 2.5 year old who is doing the same thing now for about a week. Doctor Dad said it was normal and not to worry about it!
My 3 year old twins have been pooping green since Friday morning. On Thursday afternoon I gave them some Welch's berry fruit chews...colors were purple, blue, and red. First time for them. I thought that did it. They also had some sweet potatoes on T-Day but not much and it isn't a new food for them. Well they have had at least two green BMs each day since. Very soft, not formed. They are eating as usual. They don't seem to be complaining about tummy troubles.
Anyone know what this is? Didn't want to call pedi if it was the fruit chews.
Thanks
So.....I waited a couple of days. They pooped green for about 2 full days, 3rd day was so-so. On the 4th day it was all back to normal. I think it was the Welch's fruit chews (berry flavor).
Thanks mamas, it was nice to hear from the experienced. And I did chuckle a couple of times.

My kids at times have had this when they were sick. I buy over the counter lactobaccilus(sp) at CVS Pharmacy and it helps stop it right away. The lactobaccillus(acidophilos) is just like in yogurt(good bacteria) to take care of the bad but it is better absorbed without the sugar of the yogurt. It is refrigerated at CVS and you can just ask the pharmacist for it. It comes in packets you can dissolve in milk or water.
Good luck :)

Okay i have to laugh and say there fine. Like other moms have said it is probly food coloring. Blue dye will do it the most. Now i have to tell you a story to make you laugh
Last 4th of July we bought Red, White and Blue chips for a party. We bought one bag to many and took it home. We ate them in our lunches, with meals, snacks and what ever till they were gone (it was a HUGE bag) durring this time my husband, me and my daughter were all having bright green poop! Neither wanted to say anything to the other but we kept thinking to our selfs, that there must be something wrong (we finally did though and had a good laugh). This went on for about 2 weeks. Before we found out what was causing it.
Its normal, dont worry every kid (and adult) experiences it.
Purple (grape) drinks and candy will do that, Welchs, kool-aid, etc., something about the food coloring. It has happened to my kids and I actually found a website that explained it to me back then.
I have been told by the doctor as long as it is not black, white or blood in the stool - there is nothing serious to worry about. It will be different colors depending on the colors of food they eat, especially if they eat foods with food coloring - blue, orange, pink or other foods with bright colors.
If there are other symptoms involved, then they may be fighting some sort of bug, in which case I would watch and call the doctor accordingly.
My pedi always tells me that when the poop is green that means the kid pooped before the food was digested. And their poop has been as green as grass -- TMI!!! Sorry :)
If he's not sick, it could be broccoli or something like that. Green could also be rotavirus. It is very contagious btw. My son was vomiting for a day but then had green parrot poos for about a week.
I'd call the ped just to check on Monday if it continues.
Grape juice can cause green poop.
Same thing happened in our family. This summer my 5 year-old son had a small blueberry flavored sno-cone, and he pooped bright green 2x a day for at least three days afterwards. If the poop is uniformly green and the color seems to fade over time, then my vote would be that it's due to the fruit chews.
It was probably the fruit chews. Foods that have any artificial coloring can make you poop green. My sister loves Fruity Pebbles and has had this phenomomena happen to her - several times (btw - she's 29).
If the poop looks normal except for the green color, it's probably the fruit chews. I remember when my daughter was 2, I got her some Blues Clues applesauce,(bright blue color) which she loved. I almost fainted when I changed that first diaper after she ate a little container of it...it was some alien green color I can't even describe! She wasn't sick, and she acted fine, so I just didn't let her have the applesauce for a few days, and the green went away.
Hello!
Have they been eating any of the "kid's" cereals, such as Fruity Pebbles, etc? My children don't usually eat breakfast cereals but their Gammy gave them a box she bought and they loved it so much they couldn't stop eating them. Well, my three year old did have very green bms and since this was the only "different" thing they had been eating, I thought the cereal was the cause. As soon as they stopped eating the cereal, his bms were "normal". I'm guessing the dyes are the cause.
Take Care!
D.
My boys poop green when they've had those same fruit chews and whenever they eat blueberries.
It's the dye in the purple candy. It happens also with grape Kool-Aid.
God bless.
Are you missing any green crayons? That is usually the culprit of mystery poop color in my kids...
My kids can find crayons everywhere I swear!
Bananas tend to do this too, but I wouldn't worry about the color, as long as there is no blood.
Good luck,
A.
OMG! My son just had a bright green poop and I remembered that I saw your post yesterday, but I didn't look at it because we had never had the bright green poop adventure so I didn't think I could help you so I didn't read the post. Long story short...guess what my son had yesterday for the first time...Welch's berry fruit chews. Problem solved.
Thanks!!
:)
Roto-Virus tends to make very lime green poop and usually has a very fowl smell.
If your child isn't having any other symptoms it probably isn't anything to be concerned with.
My kids have both had this as well. My pediatrician said that us moms spend way to much time inspecting poop! As the other moms have said, as long as they aren't acting sick it is most likely something they ate and absolutely nothing to worry about. You pretty much only have to worry if they don't poop or poop too much, not what color it is. At least that is what I have been told. But obviously from the amount of reponses it happens VERY often. Good luck with having 3 yr old twin boys. My boys are 20 mos. and 3 and are a handful!!!
It's the fruit snacks! Also happens with fruit loops. No worries!
Anything with purple or blue dye causes green poop. We discovered this after giving our son blue gatorade. Don't worry, they're fine!
Its from the color purple. Grape juice, and grape soda does it for my boys. FYI there is an antibiotic that gives a red color BM looks like blood, but don't panic until you confirm with doctor its his med. Looks like you have a multitude of don't worries-its normal
I have to say that it freaked me out the first time it happened to my ds. It is the fruit chews as best as I can tell from my experience. It will go away in a couple of days and doesn't seem to be any thing to worry about. My sister says it happens to her kids when they have fruit chews as well.
Do you regularly give them vitamins? It sounds like they could have too much iron in their diet. That will cause your "shoo-shoo" (as we call it) to be green!
You might talk to your doctor about it, because too much iron in their diets can be harmful.
If you do give them vitamins check the amount of iron!
My just turned 4 year old has the same issue whenever she eats anything like the gummy fruit snacks or fruit roll-ups. It's takes a few days to pass, but she never complains, so I'm pretty sure it's just that the food coloring isn't processing correctly. I try to avoid those snacks, if possible.
My son does the same thing everytime he eats or drinks anything purple in color. It is a weird neon green color and doesn't look natural at all. The funnest thing was when he went to visit his dad, he called me furious and super upset about the green poo. I think he was ready to take him to the er. I had good laugh!!
If there are no other problems, I don't think that I would worry about it.
Hi there, just to answer your question, incase no one else has, pooping green is no reason to worry. My son did it for years, not just a few diapers. All it means is that his body is processing his food to fast or something like that. I don't remember the whole thing, but I do know it nothing to worry about and it's definately not the perticular food he has eaten. C.
Nice to know that this happens to someone else! My 3 year old son poops green sometimes too. His doctor told me that it will happen sometimes when their tummy acid is over productive. That being said I have traced it to Gatoraid. Everytime he has some his poop is green - this happens to my girlfriends daughter too. So, I think it is all what they eat - especially if they are eating and playing like normal.
Sometimes drinking grape Kool-aid or Sonic slushes causes green poop, so it could have been the purple Welch's fruit chews. If they are acting ok, I'd say don't worry about it.
If its a runny green color and stinks smiular to paint fumes, its something they ate more specificlly fruit, juice is the worst for our 3 yr old. He only gets 4 ozs a day and sometimes it just goes through or when it does is green and stinks a lot. The same happens with yogurt....my kids love this stuff and do not get sick....jsut have noticed the green too.
