Poop Question - Whitefish,MT

My 4 month old is still having watery/seedy poops but about 75% of them leak out of the diaper. He is breastfed and about 16 pounds. Wondering if this is a diaper issue or if a baby can poop too much? We usually rotate between huggies, target and luvs brand diapers. When should the poop not be so watery for breastfed babies?

What can I do next?

In a couple of months when he starts to eat solid foods his poop will change in consistency and it will smell worse! Some breastfed babies poop a lot and some poop just a little, eitehr way is normal. For the leaking issues, try going up a size in diapers. Look on the bright side, you know he's getting plenty to eat!

What size diapers are you using? If you are still using size 2, it may be worth it to bump up to size 3 diapers (even though you get less per package, which adds up, I know!) and you might notice less leaking. As for when the poop changes consistency, it won't be until solids are introduced...and then the poop will start to smell, um, different, so as weird as it sounds, enjoy the watery seedy breastfed poop for now. :)

It looks from your posts that your baby may be old enough/ready for solids. I have four kids and oe of them is a poop machine and clothes were ruined daily from yellow, seedy, breastfed poop. Once we introduced solids it mellowed out a bit.

Good luck!

Yep, once he gets on solids it will change. Maybe make sure the diaper is the right size. We usually had blowouts when it was time to move up to the next size. Also when he had teeth ready to come in, it seemed to get worse.

He will likely have this kind of poop until you introduce solid foods into his diet, which will "firm up" the poop.

It's leaking because it's so watery, and the only thing you can do is make sure he's wearing the correct size diaper, try folding the top (front and back) down about 1/2" before you fasten it, pull out the elastic around his legs to make sure the diaper is fully open to work to it's best advantage, and change him as soon as he poops. I found that Pampers with Dry Max work the best at absorption, and to save money signed up for an Amazon Mom account (it's free) @ Amazon.com, and use the "Subscribe & Save" feature which gives me 30% off and free shipping. It really saves me money on something we have to have.

My almost 3-month-old is now in size 4 diapers and had been leaking out a lot (he's about 18 pounds or so). He was going almost every time he nursed and now he sometimes doesn't go for a day, so he almost always blows out when he does. His poop shouldn't change until he starts solids. Make sure the diaper fit is good (ruffles out, full bottom coverage, etc.) and don't always pay too much attention to the weight range on the package. It never hurts to buy a size up in case since you'll go through it eventually anyway, and if it is a better fit you won't buy too many smaller ones.

Hi--
Sounds normal to me. I found if I went up a size in diapers and cinched them really tight at the waist that helped with the leaking problem. The consistency of his poop sounds totally healthy to me, so I wouldn't worry about that. As for the solids question, unless he has teeth already he is too young to start. You risk giving him food sensitivities if you start now.
Good luck!

We never had good luck with luvs until the kids were older. They leaked all the time when they were infants. I found that pampers were the best as far as leaking goes with the little ones. Then when they are toddlers I've been able to switch them to luvs or a store brand

It's so easy to forget when you're not in the thick of it, but I'm surprised he's still having seedy poops at 4 months. The watery thing is fairly normal, but not the seedy stuff, I don't think. I would ask your doctor about that part, but other than that, yes, you're going to go through lots of diapers!! I really like Luvs for my boy. I didn't feel they worked that well for my daughter, but work great for my son. Pampers are great and I love how soft they are, but they are expensive, so I went with Luvs for my son and Huggies for my daughter.

Yep sounds like my baby. He was exclusively breastfed and had liquid poops until he started eating food. He also pooped almost every single time I nursed him. I hated huggies for him but had good luck with Pampers and then we switched to Target when he started food. Though his poops were still liquidy until a year old even though he was eating food. The best diapers for him though when he was in this stage was actually cloth diapers with covers. He never leaked out of those things but I only used them at home, I just didn't like dragging all my cloth diapering stuff around.
