Pool Party in February

I am thinking of renting the local indoor pool / splash park for my daughter's 4th Birthday party for her preschool friends. My question is is it a bad idea to have a pool party when it is cold outside and for that age group?

What can I do next?

The pool party part of it would be fine. I'd just be a bit concerned about the young ages of the guests. But it's doable as long as there are enough lifeguards and the parents stay to watch their own kids, which a lot of pools require for parties. If you emphasize that it's NOT a drop-off party, you should be fine. In fact, going swimming when it's cold and wintery outside is super fun!

I had an indoor pool party for my son's 5th birthday in March and it was great. The kids were so excited to swim since most of them hadn't been in a pool since the summer. They can wear warm clothes over their swimsuits and then change just before going in the pool. Go for it!

Be sure to check with the pool to see the youngest age they will allow for a pool birthda part. I think our local pool requires over age 5. Even then, a parent must be in the water with the child until after age 6.

Also, my daughter just turned 5 and is an amazing little swimmer. However, I would have a lot of qualms even now and certainly at age 3 or 4 about her swimming with a big group of friends at her age because it's so hard to keep an eye on a bunch of preschoolers at once even with lifeguards.

I would not be concerned about the weather. It's indoors and the children will have dried off and put on warm clothes before going outside. I would, however, be concerned about having adequate supervision. I would ask parent's to stay. I would only take a child that age to a pool party if I were to stay.

Later: Our pools require an adult to be in the pool with children measuring under a certain height. At age 4 these children will be too short to not have an adult with them. I suggest you ask at the pool to find out how many adults you'd need in the pool.

Go for it! It would be a nice break! Just remind parents early to keep a bathing suit around.

If it's an indoor pool, I don't see the problem.

I would make sure that each child attending had one parent staying at all times. I think that a parent is much more able to keep an eye on their own children than a harried mom who's mind is on a birthday party. So I would not let my child attend if I was not allowed/invited to stay.

As for siblings and other family members. If you have the entire facility rented and don't have to pay by the child it would be nice if you allowed other siblings to attend. But if she doesn't want that then the families would just have to understand.

Sounds wonderful-the moist air will be good for for the children-make sure to have some hairdryers on hand-you could even put a scarf in everyone's goodie bag!

No it is a great idea. My niece's mom does that every year and they have cupcakes too. It is nice to go swimming in the winter months! The kids will have a blast.

I would LOVE to bring a 4 yr old to a pool party in the winter :-) People pay big bucks to take their kids to Key Lime Cove during the winter time, so you'd be looked upon as the coolest mom ever ;-)

Seriously, can we come too?

I think the opposite is true...It's a GREAT idea to have a pool party in February because for most kids it will be the first time they have been able to swim in months! They will love it :)

It sounds fun and different. You'll want to let people know in advance, because their child's swimsuit from last summer might not fit anymore. Also let parents know if they are expected to get in the water with their child--maybe their swimsuit doesn't fit anymore either :)

It's indoors....??? Who cares if it's snowing outside!!
I WOULD however invite the child and a parent. That way you are not responsible if something bad happened.

I see no problem with it as long as you clearly state on the invitation that EACH child must be accompanied by an adult who will "help" watch the children so that you will not be blamed if someone gets hurt or worse.

Why would it be bad? It's an indoor pool. What's the problem?

Not at all! We got to the pool every week during the winter and my kids LOVE it! Plus, it's a great way to break up the normal winter activities with something warm. My daughter's 4th birthday party was at an indoor pool and I did have every parent stay but I also had lined up some other family members of ours to don suits and get in to help out. I would think if it's a preschool aged party, most parents would probably stay with their kids at a pool, but I would indicate on the invitation whether or not you want them to stay, but as I said, have a back up plan if someone can't stay or refuses to put on a suit (which some moms might do, sadly).

The only bad part about this is that you should have posted it a week ago! I just bought a bunch of super awesome pool supplies that were on super clearance at Target and Kmart. Kmart might still have some stuff, but Target was pretty cleared out, although possibly worth a look. I would look on line at those stores maybe and see if you can pre order some super cool party favors for cheap! I got goggles at Kmart for like $1-2 each and they were nice goggles. I also got some balls and dive rings. For my daughter's party I also ordered the mini beach balls from Oriental Trading Co. They come a dozen in a package and they are only like 30 cents a piece or something. You can also order buckets and stuff from them too. They also have summer clearance too but not always on the pails and such.
