Look into converting it to a salt water pool. That is what we did. I think the converter may have been $1500. But we spend maybe $50 a year in adding more salt. We literally open it and never touch it again for the rest of the summer as far as maintenance. It is so much easier, cheaper and nicer to swim in.

It depends on your area. We live in Hell Arizona where we use the pool every single day in the summer (6 months of the year) so its worth it to us. We pay a pool service for maintanence. It costs $23 per week. They do EVERYTHING, the chemicals, cleaning it and doing the backwash. Our Home Warrenty includes the pool so if there is any major repair that needs to be done, it only costs us $50 for the deductible. So its worth it. It doesn't cost much more to run the "vaccum" every night. Its worth it to us and we rent. When we buy a house, it MUST have a pool. If I were you I would call around to some local pool companies and see what they charge and factor it into your monthly expenses. Some will also come out and look at your equiptment to see if its in running order since you are buying a house with a pool. Good luck!

About $100 per month while open, plus the cost of filling it. For filling costs, you have to do the math with local water costs. For our tiny above ground pool (3000 gallons apx) it cost $800 to fill. For our unground poll BEFORE the water hike it cost about 2k. After the water hike 9k.

It would cost us about 1,000 dollars a year for 2 months of use. If you open and close it yourself, that will save you about 300 dollars (about). But you have to do it right or you could wreck the pipes (especially when you close the pool). The cost of the chemicals is about 100-200 dollars a year. Running the filter will run about 100-200 dollars. If your pool is not heated, then you might be able to do it for until 1,000 dollars a year. But if your pool is heated, then you will probably go over 1,000 dollars especially if you want it open for 3 months. Running the heater for just 1 month cost us about 300 dollars.

I would say between you cleaning it and putting the chemicals for the winter and to reopen it and chlorine all summer 150to200 . Chlorine has gone up and it depends if your getting tablets or liquid liquid is cheaper but ome filters u don't need but the gradual packs so it depends on the filteration and all. But it's easy and not too bad. A bucket of tablets is 80 dollars or less so that and pool toys n stuff to have fun with a vacumn you should be good .

We used about $25 -$50 but it was a while back. We had friends who had salt water and it was so much nicer. The hair does not turn green, they clothes and hair smell better. It's just like normal water and not terribly salty.

I think calling some local places that sell pools might answer your questions better though. Your prices are not the same as ours.

our above ground pool ran around $100 a month in filters and chemicals.
My FIL uses about $100 a month just for the salt for his (doesn't use chlorine)

When you fill it each year, you can either call a pool service and they'll give you a fill rate @$500, or you can use hoses where you call your water company and tell them you filled the pool on 6/19 at approx. 1000 gallons. Then they will charge you for just the water and not any sewer charges.

If you buy a house with an existing pool, will you need to install a safety fence? Being in MI, how often would you use it? I can see having one daily in AZ, TX, or FL.

It depends on who does the maintenance. My ex in laws paid about 3,000 a summer to maintain their pool cause they did nothing.

If it has a good system they are fairly easy to maintain so your only costs are chemicals. If you have nowhere to store the cover you will have to have a company open and store the cover, that runs about 600 for the summer.

My pool is above ground and we do everything ourselves. A summer of chemicals runs us around 200 unless I forget something and it turns a lovely shade of green. :(

How big is the pool?
How long is your typical pool season?
An in ground pool can be a problem when it's time to sell the property - not everyone wants one and that narrows down the prospective buyers.
Our neighbors have a pool.
Once the novelty wore off, they hardly ever use it.
Their dog uses it the most.
They are always fishing frogs out of it.
Google 'average cost of annual pool maintenance' and you'll get a lot of answers.
Sometimes having a pool would be nice, but we got a boat instead and swim in the inter-coastal seaway.

I grew up with an in ground pool. The pump running causes increase in electric bills.
Prob no more than $1K for chemicals (high side)
Ask your realtor or the current owners for copies of their utility bills.
(really you should do that anyway, right?)
You can open/close it yourself (we did).
O. thing for sure--maintaining an existing in-ground pool is a LOT cheaper than installing O. later. Here, they start at about $40K.
