I was just diagnosed with PCOS and I was wondering if their were other moms who have been diagnosed with this as well. My doctor wants me to wait three more months and if I am still having problems and pain she is going to put me on glucofauge. Has anyone ever taken this for PCOC, or any other medicine. Any advice would be appreciated.

So What Happened?

Alot of the mothers said they were put on glucofauge to get pregnant, but I dont want to get pregnant. I just want relief from the symptoms-pain in pelvis, trouble losing weight, and tiredness. I didnt have any problems conceiving my 2 kids for the mom who asked me that. This diagnosis is fairly recent. So now I wonder if I should take the medicine if I am not looking to get pregnant.

My 13 year old daughter with PCOS is on glucofauge. Definately not because she wants to get pregnant!
We are also looking into nutritional counseling for the
situation. Her paint has gone away, unless she forgets to take her medicine.

Hi Y.,

I have PCOS as well and can tell you that it is a condition that needs to be treated because as we age the side effects get worse. It is important to go to a specialist as well. Your everyday ob-gyn will not have enough experience to treat you as needed.
I have been searching for almost 2 years and finally found a doctor who comes highly recommended. His name is Dr. Goldstein and his number is ###-###-####. Also check out the support groups online. soulcysters.com is a great site dedicated to PCOS.

Hope this helps!

I also have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovaries and have sufferred with it for many about 7 to 8 years. The doctor that diagnosed me only gave me the option of laser surgery. He said that it would put divets in my ovaries like a golf ball and this would allow me to ovulate regularly. I don't know about the glucofauge, but thanks to you I will do research on it. With no insurance I have just had to suffer because I cannot afford the surgery. Thanks again and if there is anything I can find out I will let you know.

If you want to get pregnant, then glucophage can (not always!) be helpful. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, but still treat your symptoms, then you might need a high powered birth control pill. I have PCOS and finally (!!) found a pill that helps with my issues. I am now taking Yasmin. It is considered brand name on my insurance and I pay $50 a month for it, but it is a God-send.

Be forewarned that PCOS can be a precursor to diabetes, though, so watching your weight is key. I was diagnosed with diabetes a little over a year ago, which was approx 6 years after I was diagnosed with PCOS (although, looking back, I had the symptoms of diabetes for YEARS). It may be to your advantage to have your doctor run an A1C every 6 months to a year just to help keep an eye on your blood sugar and potential for diabetes.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was trying to get pregnant with my son. I was put on Metformin (Glucophage generic)and clomid and get pregant literally a couple weeks later(so I wasn't on the med very long). I went off the drugs and everything was fine until about 2 months ago, when I had a heavy, painful period that lasted over a month and I knew I was starting to have symptoms again. I am back on the meds and I HATE IT!!! It does get better with time but for the first month I felt terribly sick and naseous. I still feel bad from time to time, but since we are thinking of adding #2 soon, I will stay on it. It does help make my cycle regular and lighter and on the bonus side I have lost weight (YEAH!). Like the others, I don't know why your doctor wants you to wait. They say that PCOS can be a precursor to diabetes and the meds can help delay or prevent (depending what you read) the onset of diabetes. Also, losing 10% of you body weight (which is very difficult when you have PCOS) can also help alieviate the symptoms. Some people say that by eating healthy, exercising and losing weight you can avoid the meds completely.
Good Luck.

I have pcos also. What testing have they done. It is fairly easy to see if you need to be on glucophage. Did you have any fertility problems with your kids? My pcos has been much more under control since I had my children. I used Dr. Alfred J. Rodriguez at Plano Presbyterian. We absolutely love him. If you need a specialist he is wonderful.

I also have PCOS, I took glucophage for a VERY short period of time. It made me sooo sick, I couldn't eat - even smelling alcohol would make me throw up. I HATED it! Then my doctor switched me to Avandia - and I'm fine - no side effects. I have never had terrible pain, but fertility issues so that's why I have been taking it. I'm not sure why she would wait to put you on the meds if you have already been diagnosed, but I'm not a doctor?? I see an RE in Carrollton that I love if you would like a referral.

I have PCOS and took glucophage (metformin) to get pregnant with my 2 kids. However, now that we are not trying to conceive my doc has me on birth control pills. They still give a normal period without the side effects of glucophage. In my 5 years of research and discussions with 4 different docs (3 fertility specialists) I have found that the glucophage helps with the pain and also helps with losing/maintaining weight (which can be a symptom of PCOS). I would definitely tell your doc that you are in pain and would like to resolve it sooner rather than later. If she can't help, then I would talk to another doc. Good luck with everything. If you ever need someone to talk to let me know.

You can definately take metformin without the whole getting pregnant secnario. Taking birth control pills and metformin should help. You might consider seeing an endocrinologist, they can help answer your questions in more detail.

I too took the glucofauge to get pregnant. The main thing is slowly start the medicine!!!! Taper up when starting and taper down when getting off. The side effects are strong. For me, it was bowel problems. We finally got pregnant and I was glad to get off. There are other options out there, but glucofauge is usually the first line choice. All the studies are off-label use in pregnancy, but it worked really well for me. Good Luck!

I don't know why she is waiting. I saw an endocronologist (not RE) and he put me on Glucophage and I was pregant within 3 months. He predicted the timeline exactly. His website is www.Drdavidf.com. He's a ADHD but was voted the best Endo in D magazine for years.

Good luck to you.
