So yesterday i posted about my out of control 6 yr old that has adhd..i got some great responses and suggestions but one stood out above all the rest..the poker chip reward system. Looking for creative ideas for making homemade tokens..i would like them to be thick and not paper thin. I think this reward system will work with my son cause he loves stuff like that..at this point im willing to try anthing!

Thanks!

How about just using regular poker chips? They are inexpensive, and you could make each color worth different points, or give a different color based on what it was... one color for general behavior, one color for doing chores willingly, etc.

I've not read how to do the poker chip reward system, but if it works... go for it! You can usually get the really cheap ones at walmart for just a couple of bucks.... write on them with a sharpie if you want to "identify" them...

Hi BD-

Why not use pennies?

They are cheap enough...and 'you' can decide their 'value'...

It would be nice to think a penny could 'buy' something these days...lol

Best Luck!

How about the caps from milk, soda, or juice? You can have his decorate them with stickers and you'll be repurposing something that would normally end up in the trash.

Foam. You can get 8.5x11 or 5x7 sheets at the craft store.

Playdoh (homemade or store bought) or modeling clay rolled out and cut with a cookie cutter. You can make it to the thickness you want that way. Makes a nice "project" your 6yo can help with (which with the ADHD will help endear him to the idea). Then depending on the dough or clay - let sit out to dry or bake til its hard. If thedough/clay isn't already colored or you don't like how one turned out, paint or use stickers.

best of luck!

Last week we bought some little plastic gold coins from Staples. I got them to use for my boys as rewards for doing special things, as well as to reinforce good listening. They were like $2.99 for a pack of about 50.

Glue the poker chips together if you want thicker ones!

Well, I'd probably just go out and buy some cheap poker chips, it's quite possibly less expensive and less hassle than making them yourself! ;)

Other than that, maybe use cardboard from shipping type boxes. If you know someone who has diaper boxes or if you order stuff on line enough to have one laying around, that might work. You could also take toilet paper or paper towel tubes and paint the outside and then cut them into rings, instead of flat like chips.

Hit the craft store and buy some chip board. It's really think cardboard like material, difficult to bend etc... Then make your own stickers to decorate them with.
