Poison Ivy - Omaha,NE

I am highly allergic to poison ivy. I can just look at it and will have a rash. I touched some firewood that must've had the oil on it two weekends ago and ended up with poison ivy on my face and arms. (My husband kept calling me Phantom of the Opera because the rash ringed my eye and was in the shape of a half mask.) The facial part has cleared up after prednizone and cortaid treatments, as have the spots of my arms. However, in the mean time, my hand broke out from it, presumably because it rested on a patch in my sleep or something (I DON'T KNOW!) I can't seem to get this to clear up, no matter what I try. Any suggestions?

PS: If you are allergic to poison ivy, you can also get the poison ivy rash from eating mangos. I learned this the hard way. They are in the same family and the juice can cause the poison ivy rash. I had a hand-shaped rash on my arm, because I had the juice on my hand and rested it on my arm. Bummer, because mangos are delish.

What can I do next?

There is a product called Zanafal, is is kind of $, but it works. Sometimes you have to buy it behind the pharmacy counter, but it is not a prescription. It will not get rid of the poison ivy but it get rid of the oils that spread the poison ivy. The oils also stick to clothes, which must be washed in hot water. The oils can stay on clothes for over a year. I had some poison oak in my garden one year. The next year I got poison oak after using my garden tools!

I am the same way with poison ivy. One year I got it so bad that oatmeal and the lotions wouldn't work. You may have already tried this, but I know they have pills out now that can help dry the rash out and clear it up. Check with your doctor and see if they can prescribe you the "poison ivy" pill.

My son had a severe reaction to Poison ivy. We waited far too long to go to the doctor! We went and they gave him medication but the next day his one eye was swollen shut! So they had to give him a shot! Just from one spot on his arm and it spread. I used a cotton ball and rubbed it all with alcohol to dry it out. My grandma had the same problem but she used Bleach. (I didn't feel this was safe for my 6 year old.) Just some home remedies plus the trip to the doctor.
