PMS After Baby

I have an almost 10-month old and never had a problem with PMS before (I know I'm very lucky for that), but the last few months I've just been miserable. I'm still breastfeeding him several times a day, but I've been having pretty regular periods since 6 months ago. It's not so much the cramps I have a problem with - I can just take ibuprofen and that helps. My concern is my mood! I feel like I'm so short-tempered and I can't get past it. Is it normal to have such a change after having a baby? Do I need to talk to my OB-GYN? I really don't want to become mean-mommy every month. It just makes me feel awful. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

I have had three kids and every time something about me changed, permanantly. With my second child my feet grew a half size! With my third I had the same PMS change. I get extremely negative and very short tempered for nearly a week prior to my period. He is now 2 1/2 so I am afraid this is a permanent change. The best thing to do is try to be aware of what is going on. As I said it has been 2 1/2 years and I still don't have a good handle on it. Usually by day two of bad mood I will realize what is going on and try to adapt.

If I were you I'd talk w/ the doctor. It may be more then PMS, it might even be postpartum.

I too can relate to the terrible mood swings and short-temperedness. I started noticing that it was getting better a couple of months after I finished breastfeeding. Like someone else mentioned, it helped being aware of it - although it still took a lot of effort to be nice to everyone! I finally started feeling like myself again about 6 months after I finished breastfeeding. I hope you start to feel better soon!

Congratulations on your new addition. Unfortunately, sometimes that happens. Your bodies chemistry changes when you're pregnant and when you give birth. It might calm down a bit with time, but it might not. Try pamprin or midol for the cramps and the mood swings. They both have ingrediants that are suppose to help with mood swings. My teenage daughter uses them and it does seem to help. Good luck.
