Plugged Nose

Here's the situation. I've got a three month old little girl who seems to have the same allergy issues as the rest of us. Her pediatrician has told me that the only thing to be done for her nasal congestion is saline spray, "boogie sucker", and a humidifier. Well none of this seems to be helping her, and she usually wakes up in the morning completely plugged. Does anyone out there have any advice on other "treatments" that I could try? Please help as I hate seeing her so miserable.

What can I do next?

Hi D.,
Like the other mom suggested, the steamy bathroom works. We also use the plug-ins which work really well and better than humidifiers in my rooms. Check for the age range though, I'm not sure if it's age appropriate for your daughter (yet). We are also a family of allergy people.

FYI on allergies: I read online (webmd or something like that) that people with year round allergies are most likely sensitive to dust mites. Okay, it's actually the poop of the dust mites... So then I did a mamasource search. I thought it wouldn't hurt to give some of the suggestions a try. Anyway, I bought pillows for the family that are made especially to keep mites out - the weave is too small - it will say on the label. Also, no more sleeping with all of the stuffed animals - just one. We've all seen an improvement most of all my daughter who now takes two daily medicines, not three. Yea! If you want more details, search mamasource for allergies.

putting her in the bathroom with you when you shower and make sure the shower is as HOT as you can stand it, the steam should help. the one other thing i would recommend is having her sleep with her head elevated a little. that will itlease minimize the plugged nose during the night. good luck and this to shall pass :)

My son had the same thing. The humidfier seemed to give him a little sore throat, so I would try a warm mist humidifier next time. My pediatrician recommended putting his crib at a slant, so my husband put books under one side of the crib in order for his head to be higher than his body. That seemed to help with the draining so that he could breathe for a little bit. Try it, I hope it helps.

My daughter has the same issues. She is now 14 months old and her allergy issues have improved as she has gotten older. We did the Saline drops and booger sucker (worked a little) and we would put a pillow or towel under the mattress to give a slight slant. We also did the humidifier. The only thing that has really helped was buying a small air purifier and running it in her room 24 hours a day. It cost about $70(Hunter brand)at Lowes. We are also looking to get a Vacuum with a Hepa Filter. I have noticed a huge difference. When my daughter is congested we also put Vicks on the soles of her feet under her socks and that makes breathing a lot better. It basically eliminates nightime coughing. When she was an infant we put the Vicks infant rub on her chest. When she was around 11 months I would give her Triaminic Daytime Cough and Cold when it was really bad. My friends used this a lot sooner, but I was nervous about giving her cold medicine, but it worked great. Your daughter is too young for cold medicine.

Have you tried like a vapor rub or soak? I know that helps me and my kids to get decongested for bedtime. Here is one that is botanically based that is Pure Safe and Beneficial...

If you are using a cool mist humidifier you have to clean and steralize those things often (at least once a week, if not more often) or you just spread allergens around your room (mold and mildew). We switched to a hot mist one and it made a huge difference for both my kids. You do have to be careful where you place it in the room as you don't want them to get burned, but it worked better for my kids. Also when you use a humidifier in an enclosed space you can end up with mold all over, so make sure you are checking often that that isn't the case. We also put a couple of pillows under the head of their mattresses when they were really congested. We also really like johnson's vapor bath to use right before bed. I think the bottle says wait until they are 6 months old to use, but we used earlier with both our kids, and it really helps to clean out all the mucus before bed. We did use the vapor plug thing too, but not sure how much that actually helped.
