I know you said not prepaid, BUT...I have Straight Talk (you get it from Wal-Mart) and I LOVE it, before we had AT&T, and the service was terrible and the bill was insane.

They have 2 plans each are for 30 days, $30 for 1,000 minutes and 1,000 texts and 30 MB of internet, or $45 for unlimited everything.

My family and friends are out of state and there are no extra charges for anything.

girl, the only i know of, and use myself, is MetroPCS. yes, most people call it Metro piece of sh*t, but it does it's duty! i pay $47/month, every month, never changes. i know that's over your $35/month budget, but i have Screen It, which is caller ID from anyone who calls including their name, not just if they're in your phonebook. anyway, i'll never go to another phone company b/c of their price!

My daughter had Cricket and hated it. We turned it back in before the 30 day trial period was up. We just bought her for Christmas a Samsung Intercept, and the carrier is Virgin Mobil, and it gets unlimited texting, 300 min. calling, AND internet for only $25! It's like an iphone but much much cheaper per month. She loves it so far. She's trying it out before Christmas to make sure it's what she wants and loves it.

I used to have Metro PCS. I paid 40 bucks for unlimited talk/text/caller ID, etc. and they even have international stuff you can add on too. The only thing is, sometimes your signal drops because they don't have towers everywhere. Find out their coverage area. They also have cheaper plans then 40 bucks, that was just their standard plan.

I'm going to say Straight Talk also even though its prepaid. You choose one of the phones. Prices are from $29 to $150 depending on the features you want. Mine has a qwerty keyboard and was $99, my husbands has a camcorder and was $80. Both have cameras, the $29 one is the only one that doesn't have the camera.
You have a choice of plans. $30 a month gets you 1000 minutes and 1000 texts and 30MB or you can get unlimited talk and text for $45 a month.
My husband never uses all his 1000 min or texts and as we dont have a house phone I get the unlimited because I cant go more than a day without talking to my Mom :)

We have a pay as you go phone with Virgin Mobile, it has 300 minutes a month and unlimited texts for $25 a month and that is plenty for my teenage son. He is very happy with it, and best of all its no contract...

Metro PCS. Cricket is its sister company-I think. I heard that they are good too.

I used to have cricket and my family still does. It's not the best, and it's not the worst. The phones tend to be cheap ones, but the get the job done. Their customer services when you call them is horrible, so my family always goes to the store and talks with them there. The signals are clear, but not the best. But hey as long as you have a phone.

If you'll have a laptop with you, then you might consider making your long distance calls using Skype... it's free, and the call quality is actually pretty good. You can use Skype with or without a webcam, but it is pretty cool to be able to see each other when you call -- especially if you'll be calling your kids.
