Please Help Me REVIVE Dead Grass in My Yard

I'll start off by saying that unfortunately I DO NOT HAVE A "GREEN THUMB" - I'm not a gardner. Ok, with that said, here's my story ...

Last summer I put a kiddie pool out in our yard and I left it there way to long so by the time I moved it the grass under it was brown. So now there's this really big CIRCLE OF DEAD GRASS on our lawn - it looks like all that's left there is dirt.

This really wouldn't be too big of a deal except that WE RENT our house & WE ARE MOVING SOON. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this area look alive again? I've thought of Miracle Grow or fertilizer, but I really have no clue. Thanks for all your help :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your help. As of when we moved from our house a week ago (Aug.1) there were sprigs of grass beginning to come through. What I did: I dug up the dirt, sprinkled some cut grass on top, then watered it. A few days later I got some miracle grow and put on it ... and the grass was revived!!

Thanks for all your help! :)

Since the area that is brown is dead you will need to get a rake and rough up that area, break up the soil a little. Then get some grass seed, ask your local home improvement store what kind is common for your area. Then sprinkle that over the area and water in the morning and the evening. In about 1-2 weeks you should see some grass coming up, just be careful not to mow it until it is at least 3-4 inches tall and don't walk or play on the area until it is established. Fertilizer won't do any good since there isn't any grass to fertilize in that area.
Good luck it isn't as big a deal as you would think. I don't have a green thumb and even I can grow grass. Ha Ha.

My husband and I just recently had to do this to three areas in our back yard, with much success. Here's my suggestion. First, rake up all of the dead grass. Then use a shovel or garden hoe to break up the dirt in the area, about 3-4 inches down. Water the ground and put down a good grass seed (we had success with a Kentucky blue grass blend). Then rake the ground where you just laid the grass. After that you just need to water 2 times a day if its not raining. Then you will see grass start to grow. After the grass is about double normal length it is ok to mow. Then poof you have grass. It is very important to water twice a day. Also I recommend laying down more grass seed after 1 week. Hope this helps...

Hi M.,

You can buy a product called grass patch that already has the seed in a netting kind of fabric. I think you can buy it at any hardware or DYI store. Just put the patch down and water twice a day. The new grass should come up in a couple of days.

Hope that helps!

I agree . The grass isn't coming back! Scott's has a ground cover with seeds. You could try that! Good Luck
