I have suffered through a few decades of allergies, usually so much so that I couldn't leave my house some days. I haven't had any major allergy issues since changing what I eat (no sugar, no starches, no gluten, no soy, no grains, no dairy) and eating local honey (my sugar replacement). I haven't needed any medication this allergy season so far. I made the dietary changes to support my daughter who has autoimmune issues and follows a special diet, but I have also benefitted from it.

If you prefer the medication route, then Zyrtec, Allegra and Nasonex all worked best for me.

My daughter started having allery issues last year. She could hardly breath after being outside for 5mins. The only thing that helped her was Zyrtec (over the counter) and flonase (prescription). Within 2 or 3 days she was back to normal.

The best thing I can tell you is to do local, unpasteurized honey. One teaspoon a day. The bees carry the pollen of the local area...you get the pollen in small doses and build up an immunity to them.

Hi J.-

I had lived in northern virginia for years...and had my allergies reasonably under control. Then I moved further south...and NOTHING seemed to help. I had heard that 'local honey' , taken daily, over time would help. I have done that for 2.5 years now...in my morning coffee...and find that things are under control this spring (and it appears to be a bad pollen and early spring to boot.

So, maybe local honey and the tincture of time?

Best Luck!

I use a nasal rinse. You can buy them at any drugstore or target/walmart..It definetly helps clear out my sinuses and I have fewer allergy symptoms. I also use unpasteurized honey. It has to be a local one, and it definetly helps.

The ONLY thing that helps my teen, even better than prescriptions is allegra-d. I have to get it behind the counter but it works miracles for him! He is allergic to everything, literally and it has helped a lot! Run up to Walgreens and get you a box and check it out! Hope you feel better :)

I have bad allergies. Somedays I think I'm allergic to air! Try a nasal wash 2-3 times a day. That will clean out any allergens that get stuck in your sinuses which don't come out no matter how much you blow your nose.
If your allergies are that bad, you'll need to get tested and then take allergy shots. They work and are long term but you need them in your system for a few months to start working, so get it done asap and get it done esp before next allergy season.

The only things that help me are a neti pot and keeping the windows closed when the pollen count is high. During the height of allergy season I use the neti pot first thing in the morning and in the evening before bed, and it really cleans my nose out. If I have to be outside, on occasion I take a Zyrtec, which help some too (but I keep those in case of emergency).

As a fellow allergy sufferer, I feel for ya!

My husband is allergic to everything green, so spring is a killer for him.

If he does not start his allergy meds in February then he ends up in the doctor's office unable to breathe by mid March.

He needs to start early, before the pollen blooms then continue until fall, usually November. He cannot miss a day. He takes Claririn, but if he doesn't start early enough he ends up with shots at the doc's office.

With the mild winter this year, I think much of the U.S. is suffering and Texas is notorious for being a terrible place if you have allergies. There are a few "tricks" people swear by. Not ideal for many, but avoiding the outdoors on high pollen count days. Netti pots. And washing hair before bed (so the pollen and gunk isn't swirling around you all night). Allergy free pillows may help too. Washing your bedding more often too. Some people also take local honey. Unfortunately though, at least around here, most people are ditching the otc stuff and getting a prescription. Nasonex, is one that many people I know use and say works. My six year old has horrible allergies and after trying many medications, Nasonex seems to be the most beneficial.

3)D-Hist by ortho molecular products

4)Vitamin C
~Eat locally grown and if you can find organic Veggies and fruit, in fact make it a habit to go to your farmer market (some are better than others)
~Organic grass fed meats
~Probiotic
~If sinuses are really inflamed using the Vicks personel Steamer works for me...takes some of that pain away
Hope this helps!

The goal is to feed your body well so it can respond better to these allergens- 1-4 will help with those symptoms you suffer with during allergy season.

First off, sinus problems and sinus infections are not the same as allergies (since many responders mention sinus problems). You don't mention which symptoms you're experiencing and/or which are the worst. I generally don't suffer from allergies but have experienced HORRIBLE allergy eyes for several weeks. My eye doctor gave me some prescription drops which really didn't help. Flushing them with cool water and putting cool compresses across my eyes gave some relief. I've also had the sneezing/tickling nose (no congestion, though) and Allegra has worked better than Claritin, (someone mentioned Allegra-D which will also treat congestion if that is one of your symptoms). My 17 year old has suffered from severe allergies since she was 7. Her best medicine has been allergy shots. Since she isn't done with her shot routine yet she still gets some symptoms although they aren't as extreme as they used to be. She takes Allegra every day from about March through May, and also Veramyst (nasal spray) and she has had very little problems this spring.

If you're having bad nasal allergies, also try doing daily nasal rinses which help to clean out the allergens from your nose.

no really useful help. i'm so lucky that i don't suffer much from seasonal allergies, but my poor younger son spends months every year in misery. we spent endless time and $ when he was a kid driving to the allergist office 3x per week to get the shots, and now he suffers just as much as he ever did.
you probably need something stronger, PX strength, but of course those come with side effects that need to be factored in. you can help alleviate the symptoms by keeping the house closed up when the trees are blowing pollen (hard to do on a nice spring day, i know), and making local honey a staple of your diet. the last is a really helpful thing to do, but it's not a quick fix and not just seasonal. do it year-round to help your body stay acclimated to the local flora.
hope you find some relief!

Added to all the other advice.... wipe your eyelashes with a damp tissue often. Close your eyes and wipe downwards. This cleans your eyelashes of pollen and gets them ready to continue their duty as pollen catchers.

Every year I end up in the doctor's office with a sinus infection, but not this year! I was told by someone that she used Bragg Organic Raw-Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar. Put 1 tsp in a glass of orange juice. On really bad days I'll take at breakfast, lunch and dinner. During other times, I just wait till I start to feel drainage. It just cuts it out. It helps my 8 year old autistic son too. (Nothing helps him with allergies.) He will even ask for it. I got it at Kroger in the "natural" section.

Flonase!!! It's prescription nose spray, and for the last two years it has saved my life! Claritin and Allegra (even when it was prescription) quit working for me, but Flonase rocks! I HATE putting anything up my nose, but I was so miserable last year I decided I would try it, and it's been a wonder drug. Two squirts in each nostril every morning and I have NO allergies. Before it I literally had snot just running out of my nose, swollen and running eyes, constant sneezing -it was awful.
