HI!!
I'm about 6 months pregnant with my second little girl and my husband and I are having a difficult time trying to decide between two names. My first little girl, her name is Caroline Rose. We are trying to have a name similar to hers in category...southern traditional, timeless, and antique. One thing to keep in mind, we don't want any nicknames. So, when you choose a name, don't choose thinking of a nickname that can be used.
1. Abigail Grace-not Abby
2. Gabrielle Marie-not Gabby
Also, please help me choose a name that is not going to be heard all of the time. I know that both of these names are common, but I still don't want a name that she's going to have several in her class.
Thank you all so much for your help!!
C.
Thank you all so much for the advice. My little girl came into the world on Friday March 28th at 7:40am...and we named her Catherine Grace. Catherine was my husband's great-grandmother's name and we loved the fact that it isn't as popular as some of the others we liked. Plus, we love the fact that it has a special meaning seeing that it is from a family member who was very dear to everyone's hearts. It's very strange because she even seems to have great-grandmother's coloring, as far as dark hair and green eyes. Thanks for everyone's advice!!

Hello Candice,
Just my opinion Abigail is a timeless beautiful name but has been often used the past years.
Gabrielle Marie is so sweet and also timeless. That is my choice.
Did you look up the meanings of both? That may give you more insight.
congtats! And best of luck

They are both nice names, but if you're going for less common you definitely want Gabrielle. Abigail has been in the top 10 names for 7 years now and has been rising in popularity for close to 15 years.... so lots of Abigails out there. Gabrielle was ranked 62 in 2006 and has been in the 50-60's for years... so not really rising in popularity.

Congradulations: I have always liked naming children. Your way is neat. So to go off a little from to names conjoining you have giving us. Your two middle name are the most gracious any way you put them: Grace Marie / Marie Grace and they seem most similar to Caroline Rose. All three names are southern traditional, timeless, and antique. Happy, healthly, baby!

OK sorry, I re-read your post. I guess i"m having braing cramps.
Both names are beatuiful. However my daughters class of 2nd grade had 1 abigail & 2 Gabrielles. So it just narrows down to YOU.
But, no matter how we think when we name our children. Their friends will create a nick name for them. I would rather my child be abreviated Gabby OR Abby than beavous etc.

we are also pregnant with a little girl and have been doing much research on names. Abigail is extremely popular, and only becoming more so, it gets higher on the charts each year; it is in the top ten, not just top 100. So if you don't want one that she will share with several classmates I would nix Abigail.

I really like Gabrielle Marie. Gabrielle is a very pretty name, and not one you hear often. Abigail is becoming very popular...I tend to stay as far away from "popular" names as possible. Another suggestion for a name that is gorgeous but not heard too often is Isabelle or Isabella. I think Isabella Marie is very pretty. My daughter is 9 months and we named her Zoe Arabella. I have had more comments on her middle name...people absolutely Love the name Arabella. I would suggest going to babyzone.com and looking at their list of 2007's most popular names. They rank the top 100 and it will help with suggestions and show you which names to stay away from and which ones to go toward. Hope you find the one you really LOVE!!! Good Luck!!!

Hi C., I like Gabrielle Marie. I personally like the name Gabrielle more than I do Abigail. I do however love the combination of Abigail Grace. I myself would probably go with Claudia Grace though. My daughter has a common name, hers is just spelled completely different than the rest. LINZI I didn't like the way you were supposed to spell it so I changed it (or so I thought). Come to find out there is another girl that lives in my old neighbor hood that spells her name the same way. I was pretty ticked off at first. I hope you are able to choose. Good luck in the name decissions. I already have my next 2 picked out. 1 boy name and 1 girl name ready to go.

I like Gabrielle Marie. That one to me sounds more on the line you are looking for. Abigail has been overuse I think. Gabrielle seems much less common and I don't think she will run into another one in her class. The only fear is either name she's probably going to get that nickname. She can politely correct people by saying Gabrielle when they say Gabby. My little girls name is Gracie and my husband does this when people call her Grace for short. I know first hand how difficult it is to pick out another little girl name, it seems harder naming that second one.

Hi C. :)
To me, Abigail Grace fits nicely together with Caroline Rose in all of the qualities you're looking for. I haven't come across many Abigail's at all... but, I have see a few Gabrielle's... in fact, my own daughter's middle name is Gabrielle :) Anyway, in my opinion, Abigail sounds more Southern, timeless, and antique :)
Also, my oldest daughter is named Calista and from before her birth, her grandparents, aunts, and uncles would ask about her being call Cali/Cally... or Gabby (middle name) but no nickname has stuck with her (yay!).
I think it pretty much goes by what the parents themselves always refer to their child as as to what others will.
Best wishes,
A.

Caroline Rose is a beautiful name. I like the other two names you chose also, but I think I prefer Gabrielle Marie more than Abigail Grace. I think it is the two G sounds in Abigail Grace that I don't care for. And also Grace is way, way overused...Either way, you have chosen beautiful, timeless names for your girls. Good luck and God Bless!
PS-I have an Alexandra Haggerty (boy does she love me for that), a Tabitha Jamison (both names refer to my father who passed away when I was little) and a MaryGrace Elizabeth. When we were in the hospital doing my littlest daughter's hearing test and they asked for her first name and last name, Mary McAfee didn't seem right, so we put MaryGrace together and put in Elizabeth for the nurse who delivered her and one of her sisters...

Both of those names are beautiful, the problem is that there are so many people trying to use names that are not as common that the kids end up having all the same names. This happened to me. When I was younger I watched the movie Ledgend of The Falls and fell in love with the name Tristan. Many years later when I had my first born that is what I named him. I though it was brilliant because I had never heard anyone use that name. A few years went by and you would not believe how many people were using that name, and to make it worse they turned it into a girls name.
Anyway, if you are chosing from those two names I like Gabrielle Marie better. Just in case you are anything like me and want variety I googled some other names.
I love watching old movies that have those classic southern belle names. I searched and found a few of the more popular traditional names. Evelyn, Leona, Ruth, Belle, Margaret, Shelby, Charlotte, Loretta, Annabelle.
Biblical names were popular southern names, any flower names such as Lily, Magnolia or Daisy.
Some of the second names that were popular are Ann, Lynn, May or Mae, Lou.
A lot of the southern names were made up by combining family names which is what made them so unique.
I found a web site that has an alphabetical listing of Southern baby names you should definitly check out.
Hi C.! Choosing baby names are so hard. I think Abigail Grace sounds the most traditional. Gabrielle would be hard not to use a nickname with. It seems to be harder to say, especially for little ones. Abigail goes good with Caroline.

Hi C., I am very partial to Abigail Grace as my second daughter's name is Abigail. As to the Abby issue, from the time she was born people would ask me if she was going to be called Abby and I said no. I asked my family to help reinforce this as she got older and she is now six and will politely correct anyone who calles her Abby. It can work and I do believe Abigail Grace has that timeless southern ring, especially if she is going to be called by both names.

Our friends just named their daughter Abigail Grace and I know several others that used Gabrielle and Abigail. These 2 are becoming fairly common-place, if that's what you're looking for. Other traditional Southern names are: Camille, Blanche, Scarlett (think Gone With the Wind), and Stella (think Streetcar Named Desire). Ultimately, I think you should choose whatever name you both like the best. And, by the way, a name that can be shortened will likely be shortened when your child starts school, whether you like it or not!

Very interesting way to pick, by taking a poll. Wish I had been on here 12 years ago.. haha.... I have two girls and I know that name thing is hard. I have to say that to me Abigail, although is common, is the most traditional and timeless. Gabrielle is not as common, but to me isn't traditional. I have two girls that I named what I thought a the time were not common names, but when they started school... I found out that I was sorely mistaken.
Sydney Rose
Lexi Christine (Not Alexis, just Lexi)
We picked Lexi from a movie and Sydney was our pastor's name (although spelled differently) But now that they are in school, there are several children by those names. I say go with traditional because what you think isn't common, seems to always be more than you think.
Just my 2 cents worth!! Good luck and both names are beautiful. Good job.

First of all, I can almost quarantee that either friends, neighbors, strangers, even she might use a nickname to either of those names. While they are nice, Abigail is REALLY common. Gabrielle is my pick if you go with either. I am four months preggo and have been looking at names too and want to find the perfect one. I live in TN (I know, you probably know more about names than me) but let me give you some names that I find down here that have more southern personality:
Leslie - no worries with a nickname
Julia - pretty for a girl or woman
Brianna - not my fav. but pretty nonetheless
Savannah - although not necessarily southern, it sure sounds it.

My daughters, Emily Rose, Sarah Dacey, and Isabel Grace, had what I thought were uncommon names (I know Dacey is). I found out after my oldest was born that a girl a year older than her was named Emily and there are now three more in our small town. So far no Sarah's or Isabel's. You may want to wait until she is born. When you see her face, you'll likely know her name.

Hi C.
Interesting that you would ask other mom's for help choosing a name :)
I like both names they are beautiful. I think there are fewer Gabrielle's around but I think Abigail is easier to say. Good Luck to you!

On babyzone.com there is a page where you can look at the top baby names of 2006. Just out of curiosity, I checked and Abigail is in the top 25, but Gabrielle is not. There are probably other websites like this as well--maybe google "top baby names" or "most popular baby names" and see what comes up.
That was one of my requirements, too, in naming my kids--that the name not be too common; but I didn't want it to be uncommon, and have them have to spell it all their lives, y'know?
