Please help!
My son has been constipated for the last week with BMs the consistency of thick peanut-butter. He can't seem to get one big poop out but instead he's been straining and getting small amounts out at a time. This has made his bum incredibly raw and now it has started to bleed in places. There's no blood in the stool, just on his cheeks. We've tried prune juice and flax for the constipation and all sorts of diapers creams & sprays to help the rash. When it seemed like it would be better to not have moisture on his bum, we tried cornstarch. Nothing is working. Any suggestions to help either condition? He's in so much pain that he's clamping those little cheeks together and not letting me in to wipe him up. He's really strong and I'm losing the battle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
He's getting much better! We've been bathing his bottom in a water and vinegar solution that has eliminated the yeast infection and rash. After reading Dr. Sears' 10-step plan for constipation, http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t081100.asp, we started giving him YoBaby Yogurt drink with 1 tsp of flaxseed oil. We have been giving him half the drink twice a day since it has way, way too much sugar for our liking but it is helping. He is no longer constipated and he's letting me change his diaper without any fuss. Thank you all for all of the wonderful suggestions!

My 20 month old daughter has had the same issue for seems like forever now....... she would take huge hard BM's and it was the saddest thing ever. I didn't know what to do she would just scream and cry, and hold it in and finally when she couldnt hold it any longer she would shake and it was just the worst thing. It helped if I put a little Vaseline down there so it would slide out easier. A big spoonful of Flaxseeds in her oatmeal worked for a little while, she wouldn't really drink too much prune juice. The Dr. told me I could put a spoonful of Benefiber in her juice, but that never even really helped. So now I found the best thing that works for her is Aloe Vera juice mixed in with her normal Green Juice, and BEANS. She loooooooves beans, and that has seemed to work the best so far. Chile beans are the ones she likes the most. As for the rash I also found a zinc-oxide cream worked the best, and I just let her run around the back yard on warm days with no diaper at all just to get some fresh air to the area. Good Luck!

Can you let him run around pantless while he is at home so his bottom gets some fresh air? Poor little guy!
is he eating something new. My son got horrible rash with carrots and sweet potatoes. Give him some milk of magnesia to get things going again. Lots of water and fiber. Are you using the desitin cream? The white stuff? He may have a blockage, has a doctor felt his stomach? Increase his fruit intake and fiber. You can probably use benefiber too. I use that with my son. Helps a lot.

For the rash/bloody whelps I would buy Burts Bees Non-Talc Powder and Butt Paste. Use the Powder at night and then the butt paste during the day. My son has the same problem and it really really helps him.
For the other issue; fresh fruits and veggies will help also yogurt. Stay away from milk for a few days (if he is eating yogurt his calcium intake will be fine) and give him water instead. My son goes through this from time to time and we just change up this diet and it does help.

Whenever I hear constipation I first think of a food allergy if the prune juice isn't working. Possibly a dairy allergy? Also, make sure he is drinking more water can help too. I know that peaches and pears also have a laxative effect. Also, there is a juice called Plumsmart in the regular juice aisle. I know whenever my children start with any sort of rash in the diaper area I use A & D and it clears it up pretty fast.

Clean him in a tub of water and just splash water for now. Keep up the prune juice, it was nearly a staple in our house for my daughters second year (of life). Try Butt Paste for the rash. Apply what you can and if he is squeezing the cheeks it will work its way to the affected area.

When none of the zinc-oxide creams worked (and the rash wasn't yeast) our doctor said Paladin Cream. It worked like a charm!

Someone already mentioned all the P fruits, but what also works every time for our little guy is AVOCADO- it works wonders. Also- I think it's soothing, so he may have less irritation "on the exit"
Washing with water (with a detachable shower head) at every diaper change, then gently towel drying was our best solution for the diaper rash. It involved cleaning/bleaching the tub every day, but it cleared quickly and now we use cloth wipes we dip in warm water for the maintenance. Into a covered pail- and into the wash every other day- hung out in the sun and no more diaper rash- ever...
Good luck,
S.

My daughter was on Miralax for a long time since her stools were so hard. She was withholding since she preferred to go in a diaper, so we had to try all kinds of rewards in order to get her to go in the potty. Sometimes even with the best diet and water intake, stools are hard. She is now 13 and still has large stools, but goes every day now. Miralax is now over-the-counter, and my daughter at age 3 only needed one teaspoon in her morning drink, not the tablespoon a day the bottle recommends. I would check with the doctor about what might be causing this, could be allergy or just a lack of fluid intake. I have heard great reviews about the butt paste recommended below. We always just used diaper cream if the skin was sore and vaseline as a barrier before there were problems. Good luck to your little guy.

Time for him to go to a Doctor. Really.
The proper consistency of poop, per a Pediatric Gastroenterologist we saw, for my daughter once... is that of Oatmeal. Not runny Oatmeal. But good ol' oatmeal consistency.
You said your son's is like thick peanut butter... but he can't get one big poop out???
Time for him to go to the Doctor... because he is bleeding... and maybe has Hemorrhoids from the straining.... or his rectum is tearing...
That is not, normal.
You really need to see a Doctor.

My son had a similar problem when he was younger and a friend told me to apply Mylanta (liquid) with a cotton pad on his bottom after a bath or cleaning. Its an antacid so it neutralizes the acid causing the diaper rash. It worked very well! My sister and I were just talking today about diaper rash and she applies coconut oil and it works very well for her. Both of our babies have been through the bleeding diaper rash so I understand. Good luck!

We suffered from bleeding rashes here. Buy some Viva papertowels and wet them with water keep them in a plastic bag and use instead of wipes. Even the sensitive wipes have some perfumes in them and that will irritate them more. I found this worked best by wetting the paper towel and then squeezing it into a damp ball and tossing in a ziploc bag. Then they don't stick together! Let him dry thoroughly and then you can put vaseline on to protect his skin fromt he moisture/poop. Change him frequently and nudity is also good.
Definately get the rash checked by your pediatrician. It could be more than just garden variety diaper rash. We got a prescription anti-fungal at one point but were told we could have used Lotrimin fromt the pharmacy with a similar effect. Worth checking in with the DR to see.
We found that our frequent pooping went along with teething and the change in pH was extremely irritating.
You might try a homeopathic teething remedy - some say they help balance the pH change and gastric upset that goes with teething.

My son had a very similar problem, but thankfully he never had a rash that was that severe. His rashes however got very bad when he was on antibitotics for his ear infections. The rashes would be persistant as long as he was on the medicine. The only rash cream that worked for him is one called Triple Paste. Triple Paste can be hard to find, first check your local pharmacies. The other diaper rash creams did nothing for him. try this, as I am sure it will help.

Hi! I've had lots of experience in "this area". When my son was 5 1/2 months old he had to had a section of his colon removed and. Then reattached. ( hirschsprungs disease). He is now 3 1/2 but gets bad diaper rashes. We have found the very best thing that works is "triple paste" it's expensive, but worth every single penny! You can find it at the drug store in the baby area ( diapers, shampoos etc) or ask your pharmacist or ped for an rx. Make sure his cheeks are totally dry and apply liberally. I'm telling you, it works miracles!!! As for the constipation.. Try all "P" fruits. Peaches, pears, plums, prunes and also apple sauce.... We had our share of constipation problems before his surgery. I know it's scary... But go out and get triple paste asap... Nothing else works when it's that bad!!! Good luck!!!!

I just took our 10 month old to the pediatrician for a bad diaper rash and she had to prescribe him Nystatin because his rash had turned into a yeast infection. The doctor did tell us that we could always use coconut oil/butter if it's starting to look a little too red to keep it from turning into a yeast infection. Apparently the coconut butter is thick like a paste and creates a nice barrier.
To help your son get his poop out you can use a rectal thermometer to break up the mass. Just put a little lube on the tip of it and insert it just like you would if you were taking his temperature.

My baby had a very bad diaper rash before that just wouldn't go away. I tried Zinc Oxide and it worked like magic. It's really cheap (about $2 bucks), and I bought it at Target. It's sold behind the pharmacy counter, you just have to ask for it. I hope your baby gets better soon!

PB8 helps tremendously with constipation AND will help if there is any Candida (yeast) causing the diaper rash. It's a probiotic. I've used it with all of my kids and they still get it frequently. It costs max $22 for a bottle of 120 capsules. I literally dump 1/2-1 into their mouths and they can wash it down with water, etc. Our daughter hadn't had a bowel movement in 3 days, and I gave her one capsule. Within 8 hours, her bowels had dumped.
PB8 is a probiotic with 8 different strains and is super effective in helping to keep the immuen system up and the bowels normal. Good luck.
It may sound gross but clean his bottom with a SOFT was rag a a little mild soap when he goes. it is more soothing. Let him air out AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. my ped even suggested using a hair blow dryer or mini fan to make sure the area is totally dry. Then you need triple paste. Pricy but worth it when. Good luck. (oh and 4 the constipation try cayro syrup 1 tsp. dark is better than light but light works too.)

Prune juice and apple juice are good. I have also heard that a teaspoon or so of karo syrup (dark) mixed with water can help - but be careful not to overdo that one. I would not use wipes of any kind on him right now. Clean his bottom with warm water and a soft rag. Sitting in a bath with oatmeal in it. My daughter got really bad diaper rash, and we got a prescription from the doctor that worked great.

For the diaper rash try Bag Balm; comes in a green tin. I've seen it at Walgreens but probably sells at other stores too. It's a gel similar to Vaseline and works great.

Hello, If you haven't already, I would call and get him in to see his pediatrician. He can prescribe something or give you other ideas to help. My now 8 year old grandson used to get so constipated that I would want to cry for him. He would twist his little body in all directions and just scream when he had to go. Subsequently, he would hold it, thus causing more constipation. They had a prescription which would help.
Good luck with your precious little boy.

Try an infant fleet. They work really well. The hospital grade diaper creams work really well on diaper rash like that. Usually specialty pharmacies have them. Or corn starch powder w/.cephdiphil

There is something wrong here. HIs BM's don't sound like either constipation or diarrhea. See your doctor ASAP. As for the diaper rash, remove the diaper and the rash will heal. My youngest son had a severe bout of diarrhea for a week that caused hugh raw patches on his butt. The doctor said to leave him without diapers as much as possible. During the warm part of the day in our shady backyard, I took off his diapers and let him run naked as long as possible each day. At night I used zinc oxide like a shield between him and his diapers. In the morning I'd give him a tepid bath and wash off all the zinc oxide and dry him with a hair dryer to make sure he was dry. Then it was back outside. In three days there was a great improvement. As the doctor said, the cause of diaper rash is in its name (ie the diaper).

I don't think that his rash will clear up until he's done with the frequent BM's no matter what diaper rash cream you use. I would maybe take him to the doctor to make sure he doesn't have a bowel obstruction.

SUPPOSITORIES! they make them for children..i used them on my son...we'd have nights where he couldn't get to sleep ..kicking and struggling from constipation..so i used one on him..poop came out..and off to sleep he went..doc said they're totally safe and gave the ok to use them..some people worry about them getting addicted to using those..just don't use them every day..he's 4 now..never got addicted to them..or should i say...he never became dependent on them..yes that's a better word for it..
prune juice can actually constipate..so stop with that..and if your son is old enough to be eating solids..give him oatmeal not rice..rice constipates..also i used pampers wipes..the unscented ones..huggies caused rashes..but i used Huggies Diapers b/c they were better for us..
after he poops give him some naked time and let his skin have some air..
good luck..poor little guy

I've had lots of constipation issues with my daughter. First of all, you don't feed cheese to someone who's constipated and apple juice is more of a binder (that's why it's part of the BRAT diet) and not good for constipation. Prune or pear are better. My daughter wouldn't drink too much prune juice though. While she has been on Miralax for years -- and it works well -- but for short-term situations like this one, a glycerine suppository is key. They make child size and you cut them in half lengthwise for when they're really young. That should help pass the larger stool. But you should follow up with his doctor for a long term solution in case constipation becomes an ongoing problem. Good luck!

Hi.. poor baby!!
In addition to the other suggestions posted, have you tried wiping him with sensitive skin wipes? When my daughter gets diaper rashes, for some reason the Costco brand wipes seem to sting her.
