Planning for Second Baby - Huntsville,AL

My husband and I are talking about having our second baby (FINALLY! LOL). We likely won't try to conceive until November or later, as he is in Egypt right now haha

Our daughter will be 5 next month, so I'm hoping that she will be a big help, as she will be 6 when the baby is born.

I think we can handle it, I just worry about the financial part. We haven't had a baby in diapers and everything in a while. But at least we won't have 2 in daycare at the same time!

What are some tips of things to think about and plan for? Is there a site that gives a good breakdown of costs for baby? We need to be able to decide if how much money we save by the end of this year will be enough, and to fit in baby costs in our budget & see if it seems doable.

I guess I'm nervous this time because our daughter wasn't planned, and it had been a struggle financially to take care of things.

Thanks for your tips! I think I'm excited and scared at the same time! LOL :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the replies! We are definitely going to try to save as much as we can until we decide it's time :)

I have pretty good insurance through my job, so I'm going to talk to my doctor and the insurance to find out how much we should be paying out of pocket. Hopefully we'll be able to save up that much & then some!

Hopefully things will go well when hubby comes home from Egypt :) He is supposed to come home in a couple weeks for a week & a half leave time. Last night he was telling me to have my IUD removed within the 2 weeks! LOL Little too soon :-P

What we did was estimate the amount that it would cost with our insurance, of course you can call and get a pretty accurate figure. Just call your OB and your insurance company. We saved for that. Then we save about $1,000 for all the baby stuff. You know, like double stroller, room decor, and lots of odds and ends I can't even think of at the moment. I literally just made a list and bought everything I could off it until our little nest egg was toast. I was also thrown a shower and people got me lots of cute little things like gel pads to put in your bra to relieve pain, onsies, etc. I really didn't know if anyone would do that for the second baby, but my MIL informed me they will throw me one for every baby. It was really nice! So that is what we did, beyond that we just take it as it comes!!! Good luck, having two is more work but so completely awesome!!

My father told me when I was lamenting about not having the money to have a child: "If you wait until you have enough money, you will never have a child." My father and I are a lot alike in our financial worries, goals and expectations....I was taken aback by his statement and then I realized he was very right.....You do what you can and you do the best you can....There are ways to cut back and ways to save money when having a child....Some people make it more expensive than it is because they feel the need to have a special vehicle or a bigger house or brand new, name brand everything.....Save what you can and do what you can to find ways to save money when purchasing items....Enjoy the miracle of having children and try not to let everything overwhelm you...

Well, our first wasn't planned either but second was. We have never had a lot of money but did ok financially with the first. She will be four soon. Our son is 8 mo old now and we are definitely struggling. My husband's insurance does not cover well visits and a lot of the hospital bills we are still paying. We didn't have a house payment with the first so that is a big difference. I think you should definitely realize it will be more expensive but if you wait till you think you have enough money, you might wait forever. Really the most expensive thing I've realized are the unexpected things that happen...like my son had to have a "down there" surgery and that was almost $10,000. Insurance covers all but $2000 but still added with other bills it is starting to pile up! Good luck!
