Places to Stop on the Way to Destin, Florida from Dallas (Or That Direction)

I know that Destin, Florida is a popular place to go for vacationing with the family. We don't have anything planned yet, but if I were to consider it, I need to have my game plan ready to present to my DH.

We have two 2 year olds. We would be coming from the Dallas area. If we were to drive, what would be some great places to stop and eat or stretch? Or, do you just stop at rest areas and make the best of it?

What can I do next?

Driving with TWO 2-year-old! Wow! I'm torn with attempting a 20-hour drive with our 1 1/2 year old... As for the drive along the coast... There are some really nice scenic drives along the MS and AL coastlines. It will add time to your drive because they are smaller highways, rather than interstates, but worth it if you have the time. Are you looking for places to see/visit, or just stop for food/stretching? I grew up in south MS and spent a lot of time along the gulf coast, so if you give me a better idea of what you're looking for, I can probably give you some suggestions. There are water parks, family-friendly local restaurants, historical sites, museums, aquariums, and all other sorts of things to do (from Louisiana all the way through Florida)! Please let me know if you'd like more information!

Don't know if you've ever watched Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network, but it showcases to-die-for food around the country! You can go to website and look up the places... you might just find a stop along the way! Hope you have a good trip!

We love to see the sights on the way to a destination. Going the northern route, you can stop and drive through the Vicksburg Civil War park if you like history. You can stop and walk or just drive through. The town is also very quaint.
On the southern route you could stop in New Orleans where there's lots of great food. We have also loved getting out and walking on the beaches in Gulfport and Biloxi.

oh for sure go thru the plantation river road right outside of NOLA because you can walk right up the hill at the grass levees and see the big paddle boats go right on down the river. You can stop at some of the plantations. In AL you should go and visit the battleship - what kids dont like walking on a big battleship? Stop at the beaches like the other poster said...those are soo nice.
