Pizza Delivery Charge

I normally tip a $1 per pizza when having pizza delivered. Am I supposed to tip on top of a $2 delivery charge when having 2 pizza's delivered? I hate the whole tipping thing. I wish prices just included everything and took the guesswork out of paying for things.

Have a lovely evening, :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well thank you for the eye opener! Luckily for pizza delivery men in my area I only order pizza once in a blue moon so they haven't been undertipped too many times in the past ;)

And so you all don't think I'm terrible-when it comes to tipping in restaurants I tip a minimum of 20%. I don't know where I got the $1 a pizza rule in my head.

As always thanks for taking time to answer. I love Mamapedia for getting perspective on things. :)

My son delivered pizzas, for around a month cause it sucked, the driver does not get a cut of the delivery charge. That goes to the establishment to pay for having and employee to deliver it. They also don't pay the delivery guys for gas or wear on their car so you really should tip them. :)

It also depends on how far away you live from the place, you need to at the very least cover the gas it costs for the driver to get to you. If you don't then you're actually making the driver pay in order to bring you pizza, which isn't nice. I tip at least 15%, but that's only because I've done the job before and I know how much they get stiffed, especially nowadays.

One dollar tip on a pizza delivery? Do they egg your house afterward? ;)

We tip around $4 on a pizza charge of around $20. Cut the kids some slack, eh!

I usually tip $3-5. I want them to remember my house and next time I call up for a delivery maybe I will be first! I used to work at Pizza hut and no, the delivery charge does not go to the driver. Tips and minimum wage do. The tips help pay the poor sap for gas. $1 is nothing, sorry!

Yes. The delivery charge is something that the company pockets not the driver. And $1 per pizza is kinda cheap to be honest. Pizza delivery drivers dont make a lot per hour and they rely on tips.

I tip 15% for pizza delivery, more if it's markedly fast. He's a waiter, but instead of walking it to you, he is also scratching up his car with that sign, burning his gas, wear and tear on the car, etc.
No disrespect, but if I feel that I don't have the money to justify paying for the pizza AND the delivery (but am just not going to go pick it up myself), then I will just buy a frozen pizza and doctor it up at home. I kinda feel that if I don't have money for a tip, I ought not be paying for the convenience food to begin with. We usually do pizza delivery about once every 2-3 months (for a babysitter, or a tv sports night where we are busy with guests, etc).

The delivery charge is separate. Tip the delivery guy on top of the cost of the pizza, the tax, and the delivery charge.

NOrmally that delivery charge does not go to the driver..it is strictly for the company. I am pretty generous with my tips for the pizza delivery driver...they drive their own car and use their own gas for a pretty low paying job. It is not unusual for me to tip $3 for a single pizza delivered to my door.
Food for thought....do you know where the use of the word "tips" came from???

The tip is what these drivers make. They live off of this. The delivery charge is a bogus charge that the store charges for extra income. It DOES NOT go to the driver. My husband was part owner in a Papa John's and NEVER had a delivery charge because people don't want to tip and he wanted happy employees. If you don't like tipping, pick up your pizza from the store. Standard tipping for drivers is $1.00 per pizza or 10% of the total cost.

If you don't like the delivery charge, complain! It might work eventually...

the delivery charge is not something the driver gets. That goes to the company. they charge it because THEY CAN...

When we order pizzas and pay - we usually give them 10% of the bill. Yes, that's cheap but that's what we typically do.

There are restaurants that do the whole thing - gratuity, etc. but it's usually not a pizza delivery place!! LOL!!!

I don't think the delivery charge goes to the driver. For a $20 delivery, we would probably give a tip of $3-4....similar to a eat-in check tip.

That's why I never get delivery. A $10 pizza turns into $16. I'm too cheap. :)

I usually tip the guy $5 as he is driving to our house in his own car. he makes minimum wage. so for $8 an hour he is schlepping around putting sometimes 40 miles a night on his car and using up his gas. thats a lot of driving for low pay

I always tip my delivery drivers more than I do when I dine-in. They have to deal with traffic, add miles to their car, AND pay for gas out of their own pocket. I usually shell out at least an $8-10 tip if the pizza gets to me still hot. The best part of that is, that now I ALWAYS get my food really quick, and I have heard that drivers will actually argue over who gets to run my orders out. ;)

If tips were included in the price, then what incentive would there be for waitstaff and drivers to do well? Not to mention, that people who are able to earn tips usually get paid well below minimum wage.

I always tip $5. My neighbor tips $2 from the same place. My pizza is always at our house faster. Drivers spend the gas and wear/tear on their car to bring dinner to you. I agree that it's a pain, but it's convenience too. So $5 always. That's for 1 or 5 pizza's.

We usually tip at least 10% - but in the past, have gone higher if they really did get it here as fast as stated on the phone! Let's just say, we were remembered as good tippers - this was confirmed by one of my kid's friends who used to deliver pizza and did deliver to us (before the friendship).

I always tip at least 20% if it gets to my door hot. If it is under a certian amount of time (obviously within speed limit) I will add another 10%.

If it arrives barely warm and late (like 45-60 mins after the time they said it would be delivered) then I will only tip 10% maybe 15%. Only happened once.

With that we usually go and pick it up or dine in it ensure hotness, plus we only eat out for pizza once a month, homemade is so tasty.

i used to be a delivery driver for pizza hut. i was happy to get $2 per delivery from the customer. think about this...when you spend your gas money to go to a resturaunt and have someone walk your food to you do you tip 15% of your bill? if so why wouldn't you tip the person spending their gas money and wearing their car out by driving you your food the same. the reason we started getting a delivery fee was because there are many that didnt tip at all. i can't imagine going into a resturaunt and not tipping my waiter. the way i see it is that if you can't afford to tip then go to a buffet or stay home and cook. i've even gone to houses where the people were having a party and ordered 10 pizzas and i didn't even get a dollar. we also deliver to schools. on lunch days we would make multiple trips to the school with huge pouches full of pizza and schools dont tip either. just something to think about. but 2-5 bux i think is a nice amount to give. by the way as a driver we got at least some of the delivery charge...can't remember how much of it now though. and we would fight over who got to take the order going to houses we knew tipped well.

We typically tip $3 for a delivery. The delivery charge often goes to the restaurant and not to the driver or it's split between the two but not always an even split.
