Pink Eye - Need Help

Hey moms,
My 3 year old was diagnosed with pink eye on Monday. She was ok about the eye drops the first few times (she needs them 3 times/day) but now there is major drama just to get her to lay down so I can put them in. I have tried bribery (not the best option but it doesn't even work) staying calm, getting mad, holding her down, putting them in when she's asleep (she woke up crying) If you have any ideas I would really appreciate it. Also, how long does it normally take to clear up? The doc said 24 hours to a few days. The goopy eyes are really starting to get on my nerves. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi Christine,

You may need to try and recruit someone else in the house to help you. One of you will need to hold her down while the other person tries to hold her eye lids open and squirts. Good luck!

Just hold her down...use your legs if you have to. It should clear up within a couple of days.

Hi Christine:
I'd have help,so you can do it quickly. The more you struggle with her yourself, the more frightened she will be. The idea is to minimize the drama for her.Remember, to wash your hands constantly during the day,and wash anything she uses around her face, as (pink eye) is very contagious.I wish your sweetie a speedy recovery.

My girls have had pink eye several times. Ages 2 & 4. We have them close their eyes, put the drop in the corner and have them blink. You may already be doing this. Sometimes it was a 2 man job...one holding arms down, the other putting drops in. In our experience, after 1-2 days of drops 3 times/day, the goo was gone. but you need to continue for 5-7 days.

Hi Christine, There's a cream that I used when my kids were little, it doesn't bother them as much as the drops do, if the drops is all the doctor gave you, then you just got to use them, and honestly there is no magic way to get small children to cooperate with the drops, my kids didn't fight me, they would close their eyes when they knew the drops were coming and it was very wasterful. Pink eye is hight contageous, so mkae sure you wash all her beding and everything she has laid her head on. the goopy stuff is gross, but after usuing the drops for 24 hours they should start drying up. If your little one is particularly strong like my son, I've tried holding him down for stuff and it just ended up with my bruised.

So, how about making them 'magic' drops that will make her 'boo-boo' go away? My son is 30 months, and has to take two inhalers daily for allergy induced asthma. Now, he does it on his own. When he was younger I made a big deal about how they were 'magic' and would make him not feel sick anymore. Now, he's got no issues with taking vitamins or stuff like that when we need to.

Good Luck!
