We found out on Thursday evening that my oldest has pink eye. We have drops that she gets 3x daily, and have found today that if she doesn't get them right on time, she begins having troubles. I'm wondering if it will be safe to send her to school on Monday or do I wait until she's done the meds? She only attends school on Monday and Wednesday this week. This is our first experience with Pink Eye, so other than knowing that it's highly contagious, I know very little about it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

We ended up in the hospital with a double ear infection in the wee early hours of Monday morning, so my daughter did not go to school that day. She woke up feeling much better, but we still kept her home. By Wednesday she was much more herself, so I called the school to get their take on it, and they said since had been a week, and they didn't have to administer any meds, then she was fine to return to school, which is what we did. She is happily back to normal with the exception of appearing to have difficulty hearing at times, so we are planning to visit the doc for an ENT specialist appointment to test for hearing loss. Thank you everyone for your advice.

I think that it will be fine. She would have been on the anitbiotic for 4 days and 1 dosage by then. The school, however, may have different rules about this.

From what I've heard about pink eye, because it's very contagious, the schools won't let a child with it come back until they have finished the medication and no longer considered contagious; check with her school to find out if you can send her or not.

Keep her home because it is highly contagious and if she passes it to classmates, chances of reinfection are greater. The school would probably send her home anyway, especially if her eye is still pink. Make sure she keeps her hands away from her eyes and washes her hands often.

Please don't send her to school. Pink eye is spread very easily. The teachers and the other parents would be very happy (and understanding) if you kept your daughter home until she done with her meds and is completely back to normal.

I would not send her to school until she gets well because if you do its going to spread very fast. And to help it get better I would put a warm rag but dont burn her face just right for her temperature and leave on her eyes for about ten to twenty minutes or so try that. And pink eye is usally caused by allergies and you should used proscribed eye drops by doctors not eye drops that are not

I have 4 kids so we have had pink a number of times over the years, I have found that vigamox drops work the best and are fast at getting the infection cleared up. If your child has been on drops for a number of days it should be ok to go to school. The infection should be starting to if not almost cleared up by now, if it persists then do not be afraid to ask for different drops. Another thing to watch out for are ear infections because they often go hand in hand with pink eye. Good luck.

I am a teacher and my own kids have had pink eye. They can go to school 24 hrs after having their first drops in their eyes. Make sure you are using a prescription because the stuff over the counter does not work! Also, encourage them to wash their hands frequently and watch your other kids. It spreads easily in the household.

There are different types of pink eye (bacterial and viral). Meds can treat bacterial and typically after she's been on meds for 24-48 hours she should be good to go (but do finish the full course of medication). Unless her eyes are actively dripping or goopy you should be fine to send her to school Monday. Try to watch that she doesn't itch or touch her eyes and always encourage really good handwashing. Remember to wash and disinfect any items that would have come in direct contact with her eye or tears (pillow case, stuffed animal, clothing, etc).
Welcome to the school years :)

The Doctor that gave you the RX should have given some instructions to follow. If you have any doubt at all if she should go to school Monday --follow your intuition and do not send her. My son goes to school on Mon and Wed also and I don't want him to have a chance get pink eye--since it is highly contagious. Thanks so much. Good Luck.

Both my 3 1/2 year old & 1 1/2 year old have had pink eye. She is contagious until the "goop" is gone. So if she is still "goopy" on Monday morning, please do not send her to school. The "goop" should be gone by Monday (if she has been getting drops since Thurs eve or Fri) and if it's not, call the doctor for a different eye drop. That is what we had to do the first time my daughter got it since the first prescription wasn't working after a few days. Good luck.

NO the rules of the school and any other parent who has a child would hope all parents follow these is until the child is complete cured of any type of virus and or deases or sickness for a complete 24 hrs he or she is not allowed in school. If your child has a tempature there not allowed back to school until the temp is gone for over 24 hrs. Also for pink eye is highly contagious doesn't matter if she is on drops or not. Until the drops are completely gone and it has been 24 hrs i woulod not send her. There are two types of pink eye. One type is its a virus that the drops actually don't work but your body has to fight it off. and another type is where its viral and the drops work. I am not completely ok from what you said above that the drops are working like they should. I would as a parent wait it out and she probably should miss this week to make sure. I would let her miss till your sure its gone.
