Sounds like Pink Eye, and yes it can be red all the way around the eye as well as swelling. This is VERY contagious, from what I understand, you need to get her to the doc to treat it. I don't think it will go away on its own.
My 2.5 year old has a bright red patch/spot under her eye...at first we thought it was a bruise. Her eye is also tearing, slightly bloodshot and goop is collecting in the inner corner. I would assume pink eye but is it normal to have redness surrounding the eye too? It may be spreading to her eyelid as well. Has anyone tried the OTC drops called Similsan or something like that?
Well, it sure looks like pink eye this morning. And it has spread to both eyes. Obviously the doc's office is closed since it is Sunday and we discovered this Sat afternoon. We could take her to Urgent Care but that place always seems more germy than it is worth. I think we'll wait until tomorrow and call our pediatrician. Though from previous experience, I can tell you that they will just call in a prescription without having us come in. They say it is too contagious to have kids come in to be examined for and I guess they trust the parents' assessment of the symptoms. Thanks for your help. I am off to clean her goopy eyes!

Sounds like it could be a clogged tear duct and an infection. I'd make a quick visit to the doctor to have it checked out. You don't want to mess around with this or that people recommend on here for eyes. Just go to the doctor.
I would taker her to the doctor as soon as possible. When my daughter got pink eye last year, it looked like someone punched her in the eye. The entire eye-lid and surrounding area was puffy, swollen, and bright red. No one, including her Aunt who is an RN thought it was pink eye, but when we took her to the DR that's what it was. We were given a script for Vigamox and it cleared it right up. Hope this helps, and good luck. :)
We use colloidal silver, which you can buy at Whole Foods or at a health food store (not Vitamin Cottage though). Put some on a cotton ball and wipe the *closed* eye with it. It is extremely soothing and will get rid of the pink eye. Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic, which you cannot grow immune to like pharmaceutical antibiotics. Great stuff!
Please take your child to the doctor asap if you have not already.
My DS who is 21 months just had this last week. I thought it was pinkeye also but the whites in his eyes were not pink. He had pink under his eyes and when he woke up in the morning his eyes were stuck shut from discharge. It cleared up in 2 days and I never had to bring him in or give him anything for it. No idea what it was but it did go away on its own.
you need to go to the pediatrician because if its bacterial pink eye your daughter needs a prescription. OTC is only for viral and allergic pink eye relief.
Definitely sounds like the beginning of pink eye. You'll need to take her in soon.
In the interim, here's what the 2 Opthamologists in our family usually recommend:
Use a clean bowl, sterile cloth/rag, fill with warm water and a few drops of Baby Shampoo. Clean and rinse both eyes. The non infected eye first, then the goopy eye. Use a different corner of the cloth or a new cloth. The baby shampoo, as all Mamas know, is non-tearing and gentle enough to clean the eye with. This is how they clean eyes in the OR.
Our daughter has had pink eye twice. Both times we made a cup of tea and added in salt. Take a washcloth and hold it over the infected eye - for however long she'll let you (ours wasn't long and it still worked). Do it a couple/few times a day. It worked both times for us. The first time we were traveling and it was a holiday so we couldn't get a prescription. We looked online for remedies and this worked well for us. Good luck!

I'd wait it out for another day or two. There is a virus going around right now and it looks a lot like pink eye. My daughter got it over the weekend, and it lasted 2-3 days, and then my son got it. It's not as nasty as pink eye, but still pretty bad. Funny thing, even the doc didn't want to treat it after seeing it, but did treat the ear infection that was with it. On Monday or Tuesday if it's still getting worse, have it checked out. Either way, wash your hands and her hands a lot. GL!
It sounds like pink eye , if not then it could be a sty. My kids had pink eye once and I spoke to the pharmacy about OTC meds and because it was for a child they said I had to take them to the Dr.
