Pink Eye - Richardson, TX

I found out I have pink eye last Sat. I went to the Dr. & she prescribed antibiotics & eye drops. I called today to see when I can wear makeup & the nurse said when the eyes are completely healed. But how do I know when they are healed? Right now they are just red (as if you have allergies). I feel naked without my makeup!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the responses!!!!
I think I'll wait a full week until I wear eye makeup again. I just look dreadful without eye liner. But REFUSE to get this pink eye again! I never wish it upon anyone!!
**************
A week later after having pink eye I woke up w/ red eyes (except for the goopiness). I did drops for another 4 days only to wake up again w/ red eyes. I finally went to my eye Dr. to find out I had severe allergies these past two times of red eyes. So when in doubt see an eye dr. rather than going to your general dr.!!! :)

From my experience (former teacher with pink eye 4 times), you are not contagious after taking the antibiotics for 24 hours. It may take awhile for the redness to go away, but I would continue with your drops until you're done with them.

I agree with Lucie. My son just got over pink eye last week and It is not completely cleared until your eyes are completely clear for 2 days and no oozing or drainage.
Good Luck.

Hi K.,
I get pink eye about twice a year (teacher to preschoolers---wear contacts so I am not sure if that is why I am more prone???). I wait until I have used the drops for 24 hours...I have to wear makeup too, so I usually just wait mostly until the oozing stops and I have been on the drops for a day. I know what the doc says, but that is what I do. Just an FYI...there are more than one kind of drops...not sure what the one post was trying to say, but I have been prescribed a couple of different ones.

I'm notorious for getting pink eye. But I've also discovered that I'm allergic to most eye make-up. A discovery made within the last year! I would say after 24 hours of being on the drops you could wear eye make-up. Do not reuse the applicators. I would probably go out and buy new eye make up and use q-tips for eye shadow. If you have any friends that sell make-up, like Mary Kay, see if they have any mascara brushes and use a new brush for applying mascara. I've given up on eye make-up.

It usually takes up to 2 weeks for pink eye to completely healed, also depending if it's viral or bacterial. If a doctor prescribed you oral antibiotics for pink eye then it's not pink eye. The only drop used for pink eye is called Ciloxan.. Hope this will help. We usually recommend our patient to stay away from make-up for at least a week..

The main issue with makeup & pink eye is that you transfer the infection to your makeup tools, and then you can just continue to give it back to yourself! (Yes, I had that happen and was properly admonished by my doc). So if you really want to wear makeup and won't be deterred by it being maybe a little irritating, go ahead and wear some, but THROW AWAY any applicators after each use & don't double dip - for eye shadow you can use Q-tips, and eyeliner you can break it off & resharpen. I don't have any mascara advice for you.

Of course, I wouldn't honestly recommend wearing any until your eye is healed, but I also completely understand if you need to, so again, it's the transfer of the infection. And as a PS - if you wear contacts, you should throw them away and put in a new pair. (or if they're not disposable, then sterilize the heck out of them)

Good luck! S.
