Pillow Washing

My son has one of those pillows filled with little styrofoam pellots. The pillow recently was soiled when he had a diaper blow out. It says on the pillow that I have to spot wash it, but spot washing wasn't sufficient to remove the odor (and probably the germs). Has anyone any advice on whether I can throw this in the washing machine without it damaging my machine?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I put the pillow in a pillow case and washed it with a few other items. The pillow came through perfectly intact and my washing machine is fine. I didn't dry it.

Thanks for the advice.

If you have a washing machine with the handwash option...put it in and then let it air dry. I did this with my daughter's when she threw up on it and it got the odor right out. Good luck!

Maybe you could tie it up in a pillowcase like you would a doll or a stuffed animal.

L.,
I had the same problem - my daughter's "lovey" is one of those pillows and I can't find another one just like it, so I was terrified to wash it. Then she got the stomach flu and threw up all over it, so I didn't have a choice! I washed it in the sink with regular laundry soap and then dried it on low in the dryer. It worked just fine and took the smell away. Hope you have good luck too!

My son has a pillow just the same... and he's had his for 3+ years now. This thing is old and yuckky. I wash his every few weeks cause I can't get it away from him. The bad thing about putting it in the washer is that it floats, so as the washer is adgitating, it only washes one side. I found it helpful to hand wash his. and depending on the color, always use a little bleach or color safe bleach... The few times I've washed it, its ripped a little and a bunch of the poly beads came out all over. Drying it in the dryer is an issue as well. When the beads in those kinds of pillows heat up, their chemical compounds change slightly... so I wouldn't dry in the dryer anymore. I hang mine on a hanger outside for a few hours. Anyway, hope I helped a little.

Hi L.

Push come to shove, take it to a laundry mat use a machine that does not have a center post that the drum rotates on so it does not beat up the pillow or at home with a small load of clothes to keep the washer in balance, put in a pillow case to keep the beads from explodeing in the wash if it does, put it on gentle cycle, use baby soap or dye free/ fragrance free soap, line dry or if you have a dryer like mine which has a shoe rack you can add to the inside drum of the dryer lay it on that and use the lowest heat setting the dryer has.

I personnaly would not use bleach or any other harsh chemicals that could come in contact with the little ones skin because it might irritate it.

P.S. Is it cheaper just to go buy a new one??? Just an idea

Good luck

The problem with washing it is that the material can rip and then you'll have those tiny pellets everywhere...

I cant stand those pillows. I'm sorry I work in a store that sales those they can cause a big mess. What I would suggest is putting it in a regular pillowcase and tie the open end up so if it does burst in the washing machine it wont make a big mess, and wash with cold water. This also works great on stuffed animals. This is how I clean all mine. Good luck with the pillow. :)

Probably won't harm the machine, might ruin the pillow.

Well, I can't promise yours will come out the same, but...

my daughter rec'd one that had a chemical smell. didn't want her to lay on it w/that smell so risked the wash. hers came out fine.

Maybe you could put it in a pillow case, tie the case shut and wash in machine. Hopefully, if it did come apart the case would contain the pellets.

Just Soak it in the sink or bathtub in bleach overnight and then rinse it a couple of times and hang up out side to dry. That's all I got, hope it works!

Hi, I am not sure about the washer, but you can put it in a bag with cornstarch, that will help with the smell. try washing it on the gentle cycle or take it to a dry cleaner. good luck.

Have you considered (or tried) Fabreze Antimicrobial? If it's just that it still smells, and you're worried about germs, that should take care of both issues.

Hope you find something that works!

I just washed one recently and it was fine. I just didn't dry it because I figured the foam would melt. But nothing went wrong with me:)

Try hand washing in the tub and let air dry.
