Picky 11 Month Old

Finally, it appears to us that our 11 month old daughter is teething- but with the teething, her appetitie has really gone downhill! She used to eat just about any blended food I'd made for her, and some small chunks of things i'd prepared, as well as baby crackers and puffs. Since the teething started, the only thing I can get her to eat in any sizeable amount is yogurt. The doctor suggested adding tofu to her yogurt for extra protein- but most other foods just aren't floating her boat for more than a bite or two-- Is this just a short phase? It's driving me crazy and I worry a lot about her getting enough to eat! Help!

What can I do next?

Kids appetites fluctuate. I find that offering them the food, but not getting too pushy is the best way to handle it. If she is teething, this phase should pass as soon as her mouth feels better. If you let her see you worrying too much over what she's eating now, you may help her develop some real "picky eater" habits later. I like to try to compare these things to my own reactions to food. When I'm not feeling well I don't want to eat much either, but once I feel better my appetite returns. Babies have the same reactions and we need to just wait those times out and watch to be sure that we are giving them the opportunity to eat but not pushing it on to them.

Hi, i am a mom of three. Mine are way past that stage.
I do remember! well the baby poor gums are so swollen :( ... it hurts so bad. Well, just so you know it will pass. You may want to start with some Ibuprophrin? to help with the inflamation. I bought food supplaments ( food shakes) for the baby.. and I would boil some pinto beans, and you can give tha baby just the juice.. it has so much vitamins! very healthy for the baby. Apple sauce... they love apple sauce. Bread with Peanut butter. bananas... mush them up... Guava juice! that has all the vitamins you need. Drinking Guava juice is as good as a meal! and its yummy! so good luck.

Our kids were never really bothered by teething - both loved their food, though.

Some of the things I would think would be easier on her gums/teeth that might help boost her protein intake would be edamame or any kind of beans (black, kidney, lima).

We also gave our kids a lot of fresh fruits (sliced apples, grapes, blueberries, strawberries) and cooked vegetables at that age. We left the fruit raw (they liked gumming at the apples/pears) and cooked the vegetables as they're generally harder to eat. Frozen mixed vegetables steamed in the microwave are easy and better than canned fruits.

Our kids also did really well with cheese at that age. Either sliced White American Cheese from the deli or lunch meats from the deli were favorites. We always have string cheese on hand at home as well as prepacked cheddar or colby/jack from Costco/Sams Club.

I'd continue to offer as many options as possible. My kids like the strangest things. Cauliflower and broccoli are always the first things eaten off their plate, but mashed potatoes? Won't touch them.

She will go through up an downs on different types of food during teething.. its normal :) Give her things that she can crunch onto... like cheerios, something harder then puffs and those dissolves fast. My daughter loved to chew on warm hotdogs.
