Baby was fine on Saturday. went over to a play date and had a great time. Sunday she started going downhill with sniffles and runny nose...no biggie. Sunday night "cough cough cough" all night and wheezing. She has a breathing machine at home with aburtol (sorry not sure about the spelling) to open up the lungs. Monday, she was in a bad mood and horse and green snotty nose. Daycare called and said she had a low grade fever at 3. I couldnt get her into the doc yesturday but have an appt at 3pm today. Last nigth we gave 2 breathing treatments to get the wheeze down and put her to bed...cough cough cough til 11pm last night and she was up early today (no fever thankfully) I gave her a dose of MOtrin and sent her to school because i cant take off work. She now has rattling in her chest and was in a pretty bad mood this morning. crying after coughing. (assumed this was from excessive coughing last night) at school the caretaker said all the kids have colds and 2 are home because the doc said they have phnemonia. So of course now i am a little worried. is it possible for my kids cold to turn into phnemonia in 2 days? Not sure what else I can do for her. I again am bring her to the doc today but just wondering what your thought/experiences/advice are...all is welcomed. I am open ears.
Thanks Mammas!

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies. I ended up having an emergency call come to work this morning at 9am. THey said she was visibly uncomfortable and crying alot..wheezing too. I was able to bump up my appt at the doc'st to 11am. They gave her a nebulizer treatment at the doc office and that helped with her wheezing. They also swabbed her and she came up positive for enfluenza even though she had the shot back in early Nov. Doc said that was the 4 case this week (scary thought) So he perscribed her a steroid to sheild her lungs and then I am to do the home breathing treatments every 4-6 hours or as needed. Then I was prescribed antibiotics. Doc said she did not have pnemonia but did want secondary phnemonia to spring on in a few more days or a week since her little immune system is down. Lastly he perscribed her something called Timaflu(sorry about the spelling..meds are downstairs) that is to subside the symptoms of the flu and hopefully make it last less than the normal cycle. So we have 3 medications for the next 5 days. Because of the steroid and the Neb, she is one hyper girl this afternoon. Doc said she can go back to school (or daycare) tomorrow as long as she does not have a fever....doc also said she probaby picked up the bug at daycare...gotta love the public daycares right?? So thanks again for the great advice

The short answer is yes, it can come on little ones very quickly. My example is my daughter who has allergies (hasn't been tested yet). Fine on Sunday, started sounding congested on Monday (clear discharge only and no fever). Tuesday more of the same but coughing when we picked up from preschool. Wednesday morning to the doctor we went, they are thinking bronchitis or pnemonia (yes that quick). Xray says not pnemonia but doctor feels it is so it is called "clinical pnemonia" and still no fever. Thursday morning, low grade temp that went away. Still bad on Friday so breathing treatments and a second antibotic. That was 10 days ago and she is still coughing some and has some congestion but it is clear and no fever.

So she missed preschool Wednesday through Friday, home through the weekend, and off on Monday for MLK. It was a big inconvenience and my hubby and I had to tag team the shifts but she was well when she went back, taken care of while sick, and not exposing others.

If your child has yellow or green snot coming from her nose and has a fever she is contagious and you have now exposed the kids from her daycare as well as her teachers. That is how the whole class gets sick and some get reinfected after getting better. She should be fever free without Motrin or Tylenol for at least 24 hours before she should be allowed in a daycare setting.

Also, the less she is exposed to cold air the better she will be.

Yes for sure. I had my son at the doctor on a Tuesday for asthma and allergies issues and by Friday he was very sick with pneumonia. Any kind of cough especially if she is wheezing and needing breathing treatments can be pneumonia. I know it is hard with work but you need to go ahead and take her to the doctor today. If it is pneumonia, it will get worse and take longer for her to recover.

Just to add one more thing...in a daycare setting with lots of kids it is loud and they employees are busy. They probably won't be able to monitor her breathing much if at all with all the noise. I would go pick her up because you really need to keep a close eye on her for sign of problems breathing. If she is coughing until she vomits or breathing fast and hard, you need to take her to the dr, or hospital right away. Just call the daycare to check on her. They will say ya, she is still sick. Then tell your boss you just talked to the daycare, your daughter is sick, and you need to go get her. By the way, fevers are always lower in the morning. I bet anything she has one by the afternoon when the motrin wears off. Let us know what the doctor says.

Poor little peanut -- and poor mama, too! A hug to both of you. I remember being a working mom with little ones. It's so much harder when they're sick. And, although it's certainly terrific if you have a work situation where you can call in sick or leave early if your little one needs you, that ideal is totally NOT available to every working parent. Good luck with the juggling!

I don't know if she has pneumonia or not, though it's certainly possible. If she already has a nebulizer at home, just know that it's totally OK to use the albuterol every 4 - 6 hours as needed. Even if you don't hear her wheezing, if she has a cold and has been up coughing most of the night, use it. It can help keep a more serious attack at bay. Obviously, you need to use your discretion with this, like we all do with every medication. Just know that it can help prevent a problem -- which is better than waiting for one to happen. And it's OK to use albuterol to treat her breathing & coughing difficulties while still using ibuprofen or tylenol (at age- & weight-appropriate doeses, of course) for her fever. Stay away from warm, steamy bathrooms but certainly use a cool-mist humidifier if you have one. Cool air helps soothe the irritated breathing passages.

I have a daughter who has asthma, another who had a few breathing issues as a young one and have asthma myself. Not fun! Though, honestly, I'd rather deal with my own colds/bronchitis/pneumonia than watch my children suffer any day. Hang in there, mama, while you try to juggle a job and a sick child. Hug to you!

I agree with all previous posts. Pneumonia is nasty and it can come on fast without previous breathing issues! I've had bronchial pneumonia which means it's fluid in the bronchial tubes (not yet into the lungs) and that's plenty bad enough. When I got full blown pneumonia, I was on pain meds because I'd bruised my ribs by coughing.

She doesn't need to be in school at all right now.

yes-my bet is that she DOES have it. Sounds like it to me. I would go and pick her up from school ifI were you. Since it sounds like she already has breathing issues this could get serious fast.

Uh yeah the viruse that has been going around is a nasty one. I have had it since new years day. I was fine New Years eve, Then woke up the next day coughing my brains out and fever and felt awful. Went to Dr he put me on antibiotics for broncitis. I finished that and was feeling better for about 4 days and started coughing and feeling bad all over again. Went back to Dr and is now phnemonia. He put me on a different antibiotic. I am finally starting to feel better. My kids have not gotten this and I am hoping they don't because it is awful. I know a lot of other people who have had it and they were down w it for a long time also.
