M.M.
My mom has been one for years.
She started around $10/hr - that was 30 yrs ago. Now she makes around $30.
I know at her hospital that tenure is a big factor.
What is the starting salary for a phlebotomist? does it differ depending on where you work? I found a 12 week class (10 weeks in class and 2 week internship) in a nearby phlebotomy school i will be starting soon. i know a little about it but i just wanted to know a few things before i started. another question all these places hospitals doctors offices labs and blood drives etc want someone with atleast 1-2 year experience but how am i suppose to get experience if you have to have 1-2 yrs of experience to get a job?

Looks like 28K is the median salary for Pittsburgh.
I work for a huge national laboratory in a technical sales capacity. We have a million patient service centers where patients go in for blood draws or to provide urine samples. Many of our phlebotomists come to us as a temp and then are hired full time. The salary wizard below is good but plan on the low end to start out.
About 10 years ago I worked at a plasma center. Not a gross downtown whino one. It was across the street from Texas A&M University and was all college kids looking for beer money! Drunks wither way, I suppose. I made around $10 and hour and worked my way up into management. The most I ever made was 30,000 a year ina management position. I would not reccomend phlebotomy as a career to support a family. But, for a quick class to get you working in the medical field right away, it's a good start. Once you get your foot in the door and get a job, you can look around and see what other areas of healthcare you would be interested in and start taking classes to lead you in the direction.
I think around here you start out making $10/hour and usually make no more than $13/hour. I'm not trying to discourage you, but apparently more and more doctor's offices and hospitals are hiring medical assistants rather than phlebotomists because they can do the blood draws in addition to other tasks. I just had an appointment at a large hospital last week and only medical assistants were doing the draws. Same thing with my regular doctor and the local hospital. Good luck.
