I am wondering if anyone has a child with Childhood Absence Epilepsy. My daughter was diagnosed a year and a half ago and is still very poorly controlled. I am interested in hearing what medications you have tried, which doctors you have used, and any positive/negative feedback about both. My daughter is on so much medication and still experiencing about 50-60 seizures a day. Thanks!

I have a son whom is just turned five and he has the same thing going on. Only he started Petit Maul and now has Grand Maul he has about that many seizures a day also. He was diagnosed at 2 and a half. We have been thru three drs and are on our fourth. The have been unable to stabilize him like they would like to and its getting old fast. They still dont know what they are going to do but he is losing brain function and just this yr failed preschool. He used to be extremely sharp. Although with the seizures he has lost a lot of memory. If you ever need some one to talk to feel free to contact me. If you would like my email address just let me know. I will pray for you and your daughter its a hard road.

hi, I'm 22 and I have had petite mal seizures since I was 4 and they weren't well controlled until I got pregnant for the second time 3 1/2 months ago, I was on tegretol for 18 years and my doctor tracey morson 11 mile and scheonerr is really good and she got a really good hold them she switched me to topamax and lamictal they are newer and more expensive but the older medicines tend to have adverse effects on the liver after a period of time. I would recommend something soon though because that many seizures is very bad for your little one's brain. get some eeg's and talk with a neurologists about some of the newer medicines they have. good luck to you I know it's scary I went throught it. I'll pray for you :)

My son has partial complex epilepsy (staring seizures) and I had childhood petite mal seizures, which I grew out of in my 20's. I also didn't get my diagnosis of the epilepsy until I was 13 because I began having grand mal seizure during puberty.
The best place that I have found, and worth the drive, is The Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders (M.I.N.D) in Farmington Hills on Orchard Lake rd about a 1/2 mile north of 696 and just a couple of blocks or so from 12 Mile Rd on the left (coming from 696) next to the Weight Watchers building. They also have a Madison Heights and Garden City office, but I prefer the Main Office in Farmington Hills and highly recommend it. They are a "State of the Art" Institute with incredible Doctors and services and they take practically every insurance available, including MI Medicade, which my son is on.

We have been going there for about 12 years now with my son (since he was 3 years old) and I have been going there on and off for over 20 years.

Here is the website:

Its really hard to recommend meds because everyone reacts so differently and everyones epilepsy and seizure type can vary.

I was on Phenobarbital from 13-15 yrs, then I was put on Dilantin.
Pheno is very sedating and the don't use it as often any more, unless nothing else works, at least to my knowledge. My mother said that my feet never "touched the ground" when I was on it, so basically, she said I was constantly "high" on the Phenobarbital lol

My daughter had infantile seizures and was put on Pheno starting at 3 months old and was weaned from it at a year old and had been seizure free ever since.

My son has been on Dilantin, Tegratol, Trileptol and he is now currently on Depakote, which seems to be helping for now, but we have to get his blood drawn every few months to check for constant medication levels in his blood and for liver function.

ETA: I just saw that your in Novi, so the M.I.N.D main office wouldn't be a very far drive for you.

i know this sounds weird but when my dog was like 4 she started having really bad seizures they gave her phenobarbital (spelling?) it worked wonders and its for humans she had no side effects what so ever and for the next 9 years she led a perfectly healthy life never a seizure again
