we just adopted a dog from the shelter. Luckily for us she already had some training and was house broken. But the rest I'm doing on my own.

She needed some leash manners (which are MUCH improved). Next is jumping on people and meeting other dogs. One task at a time :)

It might work out well if you don't really have a lot of time to spend training them yourself, but you'll have to do SOME retraining when you get them back, since YOU won't be their alpha, the other trainer will. Definitely have the trainer write down/video/show you what they used for commands.

I have not, but I do know trainers who do in boards and alsow train pets to make them more adoptable. It seems to work out just fine. If you have someone else train your dog, just make sure they video sessions and show and write down everything for you.

If they know what they are doing it can be a great tool for you. One of the hardest things for at home training is consistancy. It can be time consuming, but having someone else do they the prework, picking up where they got the dog should be an ease. Good for you for looking at qualtiy training. Those that I know that have done so have been extremely happy.

My sister did that & it was the best thing she ever did. She adopted a 2yo black lab & he was a TOTAL space cadet! She sent him to a trainer for 2 weeks, I think, & it was a HUGE help. She kept him for 5 years and then a job change forced her to give him to us. We had that wonderful, wonderful boy for 8 years until he died last June. Even though we have 2 other dogs, I miss him every day.

Never did this. Always trained them myself.

No, we have always done it ourselves. Just adopted a new mutt and he will start training after he gets his sutures out and his cone off.
