My 2 year old had a cold w/ a slight fever for 2 days, and now has a hacking cough that nothing helps. I've tried Robetussin, cough lollipops, humidifier, even melting a cloraseptic in hot water and giving it to her w/ a baby med. dropper. Any home remedies, other OTC meds, etc. that has worked 4 you?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, Ladies, thank you for all your input. Little one has a double ear infection that started from the cold. She is on Zithromax and the cough should disappear with the infection. Again, thanks. K--------

Elevate her matress at night with a pillow underneath. The post nasal drip is probably causing her hacking. IF it sounds like a rattle in her chest it could be going into brochitis.
Keep an eye on that.
My son had the NEVER ENDING COUGH for MONTHS----found out he has asthma....never weezed but he coughs when he gets a flare up.

Have you tried Vicks Vapor Rub on the chest at night? ALSO, I have heard that an old wives tale type cure for a night cough is a thin layer of Vicks on the soles of the feet and then put socks on. It worked for my mom! Might be worth a try! I think the humidifier will be a lot of help for her. Please be careful not to mix/overlap various medications! Good luck.

i am no doctor but i would think from my experience it sounds like croup. you may want to see a dr since she has a fever on and off. i know when my daughter had croup, they told me to take her in the bathroom, close the door and let the steam fill her lungs. is she teething by chance. sometimes you can get 2 for 1 at that age. since she is hacking and nothing is helping, i would probably opt to see her doctor. sorry i could not be better help. luckily for me, i am out of the diaper stage though...lol

Hi, I agree with the possible bronchitis, only because she has had the cough for a few days, and especially if she has congestion in her chest. My son had the same thing, when the doctors finally agreed that there was something wrong it had turned into a severe case of bronchiolitis. Now he's prone to asthma and we have to watch every time he gets a cold with a cough. Which he has now, and has had to have his inhaler. Don't want to worry you, but please be careful, and when in doubt trust you instincts and take her to the doctors. If your not satisfied go to the ER. We took our son to CHOP and had answers and medicine in a couple of hours. Best of all no one made us feel incompetant. Good luck to you.

Cough medicines just don't work on such little kids. It's due to the where the cough reflex is located in the brain and that it is a protective mechanism that is unable to be influnced my medicine until little people are a bit older... There is a real reason the FDA just stated that cough and cold medicines should not be used on children under 6 years old. I would stay away from anything other than plain tylenol and Motrin for the fever and comfort measures for the other symptoms. Prop her crib head, or use a pillow. Cool mist humidifier, plenty of clear liquids, baby vicks vapo rub on chest, neck and back will help with congestion esp at night. Steamy showers or bath is also soothing.
