P.K.
Do you use the nebulizer (inhaler) consistently. There is such a thing as
cough asthma. I would use the nebulizer consistently as directed. If he
is still coughing, it is possible he has a post nasal drip.
My son's cough has been going on for at least 4 months. It gets slightly better when on antibiotics. When he stops the antibiotics, he has coughing fits all day and night, with slight weezing. The doctor gave him a dose of steroids and an inhaler, which doesn't seem to help. and of course since he's only 22 months, I can't give him over the counter cough medicine. I've tried giving him honey, using a humidifier and saline spray for his nose. Does anyone have any helpful hints to calm coughs that have worked for you? Oh..and I've had 3 different doctors see him. An xray was taken, which was normal. There's no fever or vomiting. I don't know what to do next.
We took Stellan to the doctor again today. His lungs sound fine, his tonsils are fine, his ears look great. The doctor said it's probably due to being exposed at daycare and this didn't start until he started daycare. She said that this is very common for kids in daycare. It should improve as he's there longer. So we'll see!

Patty called it.. Yes, it sounds just like our daughter. She also had a nonproductive cough and like your son was given the same medications as your son.. next will be a nebulizer.
Just out and out ask the Doctor if she thinks he may have asthma?
Our daughter really suffered with this, but we could handle it once we had the machine..
Also we got an electric room filter for her room. Pulled out all carpets from the entire house and took down the drapes in her room to limit the dust. We made sure the cat also stayed out of her room.
Cough medicine really will not do much, but it did allow her to become drowsy enough to sleep, but she would cough while sleeping.
Once they confirm it, they will give you some instructions. Our daughter out grew this by about 5th grade..
My 5 year old son was sick before Christmas, and since then, he has had a lingering cough.. He's not "sick" at all, just has this cough.. I started nebulizer treatments on him a few days ago.. Maybe you should ask about that..
Have your Pediatrician maybe refer you to a Pediatric Pulmonologist. Or an allergist.
Because, this is not getting better.
Has the Doctor considered Asthma? Bronchitis etc?
Or any other lung issues?
Again, have your son see a specialist.
I agree with other posters - it could easily be environmental or food allergies (especially milk). Make another appointment with the dr to discuss this. In the meantime, I would try to avoid dairy for a couple of days and see if there's any improvement at all.
If he is exposed to mold, that will cause coughing. I lived with my mom and I had a horrible cough for 10 weeks. Nothing worked. She went and opened up the air vents in my room and it had black thick mold. Once she bleached it and cleaned it, I was all better.
Also, allergy's will make him cough.
I agree with everyone else. It sounds like allergies and the cough is post nasal drip. Discuss this with your pediatrician and see what kind of treatment plan he/she comes up with.
A persistant cough MAY be a sign of allergies to detergents. Laundry detergents are very toxic so you may want to try a non-toxic laundry/household cleaners. There is a lot on the market but I have found the least expensive (sounds expensive but the amount you use turns out to be way less than you get at the store so therefore less expensive) and the one that cleans the best and has NO fillers or hidden toxins is Shaklee. There are others out there that are good too but I would at least try one of them to see if this helps his cough.
PS: It is the residue on his bedding, clothing, etc that cause the problem.
Go online to shaklee.com and see if there is a person in your area that sells Shaklee or go to this website to check out the products.

First thought is an allergy. One thing not mentioned yet is dairy allergy. Conventional milk comes from grain fed cows that are very ill and pumped full off antibiotics. The milk is dirty therefore requires pasteurization to destroy the bacteria and other pathogens present that can cause illness. They then homogenized the milk to keep the dead cells from creating a sludge at the bottom and to disquise how little cream is actually present. All of this creates milk sensitivities for most people. If dairy is a huge part of your his diet, I would suggest organic milk from grassfed cows or even better raw milk from a local farmer that comes from clean healthy cows. Raw milk had been shown to refuse and even eliminate asthma and allergies in many people.
Sounds like nasal drip from an allergy. Could be environmental or food related. My daughter got a runny nose and ear infection 3x in 6 weeks. We realized she had been eating a LOT of watermellon. Removed the watermellon, and the runny noses/infections stopped.
My first thought after reading this was maybe allergens within your own home. Have you tried using all natural cleaners, hepa filters on your heater/ac, wiping dust up reguarly etc...? Maybe even the detergent and fabric softener sheets you use could be affecting him. If you are desperate enough I say have some allergy testing done. GL!!
I wonder if it could be allergies. I am surprised your DR hasn't mentioned that.
