Just wondering if anyone knows whether or not it's safe to get a perm when you're pregnant. I'd like to get one, and it seems that it would be much easier to accomplish BEFORE the baby is here! Thanks for any tips/facts/advice!!

So What Happened?

Well, I decided to go ahead and try it. My mother-in-law did it for me at home and we applied the questionable chemicals outside so there was the best possible ventilation. It did work, but it certainly didn't take as well as the one I had years ago while not pregnant. We had fun doing it, though! And it did provide a little wave to my hair. Thanks for all the advice!

No, it is NOT safe to get a perm or haircolor during pregnancy. Those chemicals seep into your scalp and into your bloodstream. A hairdresser should be telling you the truth about this (myn did many years ago). Just forget about the perm/haicolor (and MANY other things you need to avoid during pregnancy)....Here's an article you need to read:

I didn't do it while I was preggo simply because it was my first and I was paranoid. I probably won't next go around either. But honestly I think if you are past the 12 week point it's fine. Woman have been pregnant and still relaxing there hair for the longest. Most of the horror stories that you hear of birth defects or miscarriage are not results of a perm! But I do agree it may not take the same so don't be surprised. I heard that a lot.

Perms are not safe during pregnancy and any resource online or pregnancy book should tell you that. They advise you against any chemical treatments, but especially no perms.

I just googled it and it's both sides. Mostly what I read was that it may not take because of the hormone levels are going to be completely different than when you are not. So, I guess it's a chance you want to take. It's not a guarantee. I thought that the chemicals would go into your blood stream and that's why I opted not to when I was pregnant and waited until after my son was born. But I guess that isn't true. Good luck....

Besides not being safe, it probably wouldn't take.

I googled it also and a hair dresser says this (through the BabyCenter website):

I am a hair dresser. I don't know about the fumes but I can tell you this about perms. Your hair is made up of dead cells like our finger nails(which is why it doesn't hurt to get a trim) It has no way of communicating to the ends of your hair, that you are pregnant. So the hair you already had before getting pregnant should be just fine. In MOST cases it doesn't even affect your "pregnant hair"(1/2" per month on average) So if you are worried about results, ask your hair dresser for a STRAND TEST before any chemical procedure. Any woman pregnant or not can get a great perm!

From what I have read it is safe in a well ventelated area. The only problem is that pregnancy hormones can cause your hair to react differently. My mom still has pictures of her accidental "afro" from her over processed perm during pregnancy.

Definately not! There are such harsh chemicals in perm treatements. And i would definately not get one while nursing either. Come on, straight hair is in!

Definitely ask your doctor. Have you ever had a perm? I got one when I was 9-10 years old (BEGGED my mom for it) totally trying to get the "Tiffany" krimp look. Two things happened:
1) The chemicals were so strong that the SMELL of them burned my eyes and highly irritated my scalp. They had to give me wet towels to place over my eyes because they were red and weeping and it was the only thing that soothed the burning sensation during the process. My scalp got a "mild" chemical burn and was irritated for days.
2) It did NOT turn out to look anything the way I had imagined. Infact, it was horrible. My hair was thick and short and I looked like a frizz curl head until it FINALLY grew out.
I'm not a hair dresser, but I would imagine the perm process has probably improved since then. But when your pregnant your body reacts so differently and is so sensitive that I would probably be a bit wary to try it at this point. Needless to say, if your looking for a relaxing visit with your hair dresser this may not be the way to go even if it IS safe, plus how ticked would you be if you spent all that $$ and it didn't take? Good luck!

I don't think there are any safety concerns, but because your hormones are all out of whack, the perm solutions react differently and the perm may not take at all or very well. I didn't have one while I was pregnant, but I had one a couple of weeks after my 1st was born - hormones still way out of whack. It barely took and the little that did take didn't last but a couple of weeks. I regretted having even tried.
