Period While Nursing? - Higley,AZ

My son is 10 1/2 months old and I am nursing him 3 times a day. I still don't have my period. I get crampy like it is coming and then nothing. He is my second child and with my first I had my period back around 8 months. I would really like to get pregnant again in the next few months. I can't get my son to drink from a sippy cup or a bottle so I don't want to cut him down to two feedings. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Try putting breastmilk in a sippy cup for him so he recognizes what he is getting. Kids WILL switch when they are thirsty enough, you just can't give into them...that is the key. If you allow them to cry/refuse their way, they will win. If that is the only way they will get a drink, they will soon learn to use it, even if it's slowly at first ;)

Now with my daughter she was like a year before I got mine back. I think I nursed her a little more than that tho.

It is very normal for you not to have a period while nursing. I do not remember getting my period back until after I had weened both of my children. I weened my daughter at a year and my son at seven months. With my son I just couldn't keep up. He was a very hungry little boy and I felt like all I did was breast feed him all day long. So I began to pump and my husband would feed him the bottle. It didn't take very long to ween him this way. We started alternating breast milk and formula then over time cut out the breast milk all together. So if you are ready to start weening this might help. If not just enjoy the bonding and know that when your body is ready to get pregnant again you will. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

I was the opposite, trying to get pregnant while nursing & had my period at 3 months - I was nursing 8-9 times a day too. I nursed till she was 2 and never could get pregnant even with my period so I don't know that will work. Good luck. Keep nursing its good for you & the baby and eventually you will get pregnant!

My daughter is also 10.5 months old and nursing 3-4 times a day. I finally got her to drink from a "straw" cup. It's easiser for them. It's hard when you are there only beverage. Good luck.

M.,
It is wonderful that you are nursing your baby but pregnancy and nursing take a lot out of your body and trying to get pregnant again so soon can be harmful to you and the next baby. They usually recomend waiting at least 18 monthes before tring to have another child. This allows your body the time to recover from the pregnancy. I am not tring to tell you what is right for you or your family but think about it and maybe look into it a little more. Best wishes for you in what ever you decide!

Don't you worry, M.!!! My daughter was about 10 months when I became pregnant with my son. I was nursing her in the mornings and evenings and pumping while I worked (on the weekends I nursed her whenever she wanted during the day - it usually worked out to about four times, plus night time feedings b/c she wasn't sleeping through the night). My period never returned, but I still got pregnant!! My son is now 15 months and I've had two periods b/c I stopped nursing and pumping during the day. If you're ready to be pregnant again, just start trying and don't use any protection!! LOL

Well you can still get pregnant without a period. You are still ovulating most likely. I know more than one person who got pregnant when there babies were not even 3 months old because they thought they couldn't

But I understand wanting to wean at 10.5 months.
I think the best way to get him to accept something else is to have somebody else offer it. You may have to leave and go somewhere for a little while, while they try.

It is somewhat unusual for a baby to not start on drinking other things by this time, but some babies are more attached than others, and he will grow out of it. Breastfeeding can delay normal cycles, so it shouldn't be of too much concern, unless you are feeling out of sorts in other ways physically. It may also be a sign that your body needs more nutrition, rest, and a break from having more kids just now. You can cut down on the feedings to twice a day for awhile, then maybe a little less after a while, and see if that takes. If you are concerned with it, then consult with your doctor and your La Leche League Leader in your area. If you are not hooked up with that organization, I'd highly recommend them! Congrats on your successful bond with your son.

I think you should get it soon. Will he take your milk in a sippy cup or bottle? The only way my mom got my brother to wean was adding kayro syrup to regular milk, he thought that was great. I'm not saying to wean, but you may try adding syrup or chocolate ovaltine to milk, that way you know he's getting all the vitamins and stuff. I'm just pregnant with my third and my daughter weanted her self at 10 1/2 months. Good luck.

Yes you can still get pregnant. My son weaned himself at 11 months I started putting him at the table with his big brother and giving him a big boy cup It was a little messy at first but he eventually just quit nursing. I was suprised at how fast it was I am now getting ready to have my third boy any day now and my sons second birthday is in May. Good luck
