I am having a VERY heavy period since I am now starting to nurse our son much less. I seriously thought I might be having a miscarriage that is how heavy the bleeding is. It has been going on for over 24 hours now. Is this normal? I am about to call my doc's office, but I have a feeling they will tell me to come in just to cya - wanted to hear from you other mamas first. My gf says she had the same thing happen to her when she quit nursing. I am struggling here!

What can I do next?

if you are going through a pad an hour - you MUST call your doctor.

I didn't have this problem when I quit nursing - however - i don't have your body. The rule of thumb is - if you are bleeding and going through more than one pad (saturating) an hour - ER time.

Hope it's nothing serious! good luck!

I remember when I was nursing the first week after I returned home... I hemorraged so bad that it went through my pads, the cusions of my couch to the other side! But I was fine...
I nursed my son for a little less than a year and my daughter for a little more than a year and a half...
And remember both times having periods that came back with a vengence.
I have had both miscarriages and heavy bleeding during periods and all I know is that when I had a miscarriage, I waited so long before I finally let my husband take me to ER that they said I would not have lasted an hour longer. Bleeding is just nothing to mess with, when you have bled too much, it hits you like a mack truck! I fainted on the table... it was horrible. I have also had heavy bleeding with periods and it is just something some of us have to deal with but I was regulated by a birth control pill that finally worked for me.
I love Mamapedia and you can google anything on line anywhere and get answers... but sometimes we rely on each other more than just going to the doctor to make sure! Whether you can or can't afford it... you CAN'T NOT afford it... you have a baby who needs a mom that is healthy!
I know it is comforting to find other people going through the same thing... but after you know what is going on for your own peace of mind.
It's like when you ask for directions when you are driving somewhere...Too many people give directions just to be helpful or to feel important but in the end... after chasing your tail and someone sending you on a wild goose chase just because they didn't want to say :"I don't know" wouldn't you rather get the directions that will get you where you wanted to go?

I'd switch to a pad and see how often you have to change a pad. I know if it's a pad, and you have to switch it every hour, then you definety need to go see your doctor. Not sure if it is the same with a tampon. My first period after nursing was very heavy. It lasted 7 days, however the heaviest was the first 48 hours. I would call the nurse, though and see what she says. Good luck!

like Cheryl O said if you are blowing through pads you should call the doc. If it eases up then your body is probably adjusting. A heavy period for a day or two for me has been normal but everyone is different. If it persists into the afternoon go get checked out...
