Call Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Portsmouth, VA for a referral. Or Portsmouth Naval Hospital if you are active duty.
Hello, my husband and I just arrived with our 11 month old daughter. Does anyone have a recommendation on a pediatrician or pediatric facility? I'm concerned about developmental delays she may have and I'm hoping to get her to see someone asap.
We will be living in Norfolk in the Ocean View area but can get to anywhere. Thanks so much for any insight anyone may care to share.
Thank you everyone, I am touched and amazed by the responses that I got. I feel like I'm not exactly alone in this new place and in this new challenge with my baby. Thank goodness for this resource . . . happy holidays and god bless.

If your husband is in the military,I would recommend trying to see if you can get her into the developmental clinic at Portsmouth Naval. They have been seeing my daughter since she was born cause she has global delays. With everything that is said about the military doctors I wouldn't change my daughter's doctors for anything and she is seen by several different clinics at Portsmouth.
Unless you and your daughter aren't on Tricare which I wouldn't understand, Boone clinic is where you would go. Dr. Rathke is good. If you want to go to a civilian doctor, Bayside pediatrics, Dr. Vanketesan is an excellent doctor and she really listens to you and your concerns. Both of those aren't too far from you.
Hi M.!
I'm responding because we live down on Shore Dr (by the big bay bridge) and we're actually looking at houses right in your area. :-) We take our daughter (15months) to the Virginia Beach Pediatric Center on 1st Colonial Rd. Dr. Holland is pretty good; we've never had any problems with her. My husband (who was stationed at Little Creek for 2 years) says there is also a Sentara Clinic down on Little Creek Rd, if you don't want to drive all the way over to 1st Colonial.
You can contact me at ____@____.com if you have any more questions, or just want to say hi.... I know how hard it is to make friends in a new city, and I'm always looking for newer moms to talk to!
Even if I didn't work at CHKD I would recommend CHKD. They have a Clinic at the hospital not far from Ocean View. You can go to the website at CHKD.org and research any of the pediatricians. Portsmouth Naval is good also.
I take my baby to Tidewater Children's in Norfolk. I really like it there. It's a group, so you may not see the same Dr, but I've always gotten appointments the day I call. They are really good with children and make me feel very comfortable.
The number there is 757/668-6500
Hi M.. You might want to consider a pediatrician affiliated with Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD). You can find the practices in the Norfolk area by visiting their website at www.chkd.org. Our son has a minor neurological condition and we saw Dr. Larry White, Pediatric Neurologist at CHKD. He was outstanding and we felt that our son was receiving the best care possible. Good luck!
M.,
You're really lucky to be stationed near the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. The specialists there are awesome. My son has severe anemia and we have been going to the hematology clinic there since he was born. If you have developmental concerns, call the hospital and ask for a recommendation. They can point you towards the doctor that will be best for you.
Good luck to you and welcome to Hampton Roads!

I LOVE Pediatric Diagnostic Center! PDC has Sat hours, they have NEVER made me wait to get my daughter in if she is sick (same day appointments!) and I can almost always get her regular Dr. (exceptions being days off, vacation etc...) Her Dr. name is Dr. Lidel, but they have several there that are wonderful. I think they have several locations as well. The number is ###-###-####, and they are located on Princess Anne Rd. right next to Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Hope this helps
Jen
If you are not on TRICARE Standard I don't believe you can choose to go to an outside ped unless there is no room at the local clinics. If you are on TRICARE Prime, you will need a referral from her PCM to a specialist. Call 866-mil-hlth and ask for more info.
We absolutely LOVE Pediatric Specialists. Dr Fred Fink is fantastic. He is our primary care physician, but the other doctors we've seen have been great too. We usually go to the office at DePaul hospital, which is very close to Ocean View. The office is well run and I have always been able to get a same day appointment for sick visits. I have also had a good experience with nurses and the doctor calling me back in a timely manner when I have left messages with questions or concerns.
if you have tri care and want to go the civilian route. call and let them know when you have found a dr. u like they should let you go that route
