Pediatrician in North Texas

We are looking to switch our daughter from our current pediatrician. She had a dozen ear infections over the course of a year and we continually asked about tubes and were told that they do not like to refer people to an ENT until they have had multiple ear infections. We felt like 12 was multiple so upon picking an ENT we found out that not only did our daughter need tubes but because of the continuation and severity of the ear infections she had been having her eardrums were turned inward (not sure of technical term) and she showed signs of hearing loss. We had tubes put in and her adenoids removed and she has been great since then. We love our current pediatrician's staff, but feel that he has not put our daughter's health ahead of his pocket book. We would like someone who is in the Allen/Plano/Richardson/Garland or even Dallas area. Please suggest doctors other than Raintree Pediatrics or TLC Pediatrics (we are not fond of the Allen Presby hospital where both doctors work out of). We would like to find someone soon as our second baby is due in the summer so we would like to start out new with this baby. Please tell me about your experiences with their office staff as well as with the doctor.

Thanks for your help!!!

We love several of the doctors at Forest Lane Pediatrics at Medical City Dallas. We love Dr Straughn, but have also seen Dr Blair (and were happy with him as well... in fact, he's the one I interviewed when I was pregnant, but Dr Straughn visited us in the hospital, and we loved him), and my neighbor loves Dr McGonnell. They also have an office at Plano Presby, but I haven't been there.

My kids are seen by Dr. Ernie Fernandez at Clinical Pediatrics, on Walnut Hill in Dallas (across the street from Presby Dallas). He's been rated as one of the top Ped's in Dallas. My kids have special needs and never once has he not referred us to the best specialist in whatever area they need (i.e. ENT, Cardio, Ped GI, etc).

Dr. Shawn Abel in Garland is fabulous. She has gone above and beyond the call of duty for my daughter. Has even called personally on the weekend to check on my daughter's status. I highly recommend her! She's across the street from Baylor Garland. ###-###-####

Dear B.,

I have so very much been in your shoes. It has been quite a few years as my children are grown now, but my youngest began having ear infections at 3 weeks of age! In her first three years of life she was on 37 antibiotics and 3 sets of tubes (the last time she also had her adenoids removed)!

After moving to Dallas we found an allergist in Plano named Vera Kantipong. She did food and airborne allergy testing on her and found that she had very strong food allergies (especially dairy products). When we began to eliminate ALL dairy from her diet, she really began to get better.

It was a LONG road, but we finally found the answer. One set of tubes may be a temporary fix, but if the problem returns, you should see an allergist and I recommend Vera Kantipong.

Now some advice for your second child, she also told me that even when I was breastfeeding, I should have eliminated dairy products from MY diet so that my child would not get any dairy. You might consider this with the child you are carrying. My other children also had this same allergy, just not to the extent that my youngest had.

I am also a childbirth educator in the Bradley Method and a Certified Birth Doula. If I can be of assistance, please let me know. My website is www.wholeheartbirth.com
