As far as when to go, our pediatrician said probably not before three, because there is no way that you will even get them to open their mouth long enough to do anything. The dentists might tell you differently, but I know our son wouldn't cooperate. I just had a cleaning and asked the hygienist , she said maybe around 5 years unless there is an obvious problem (i.e., cavities, which will show as black spots on the teeth). So I guess it depends on who you talk to, but you probably don't have to worry about it quite yet unless you really feel you want to go.
