Hello, My name is M. and I too have a Peanut allergy that was diagnosed in Nov of 2006 when I was 36 years old, I substitute SUNBUTTER crunchy for peanut butter and it does not bother me and it tastes better than peanut butter I think my husband even loves it( www.sunbutter.com) although it is a bit more expensive as it is made where there are NO peanuts around anywhere. The recommendations now for introducing Peanut Butter is 3 yrs of age.It is very likely that the peanut butter caused the reaction you have described. Here is a link ( I hope it works) that will tell you what foods are safe for him to eat but as always check the package label every time as the company may change it!

STAYING PEANUT-FREE:
Read labels and avoid foods that contain any of these ingredients:
Peanuts
Peanut butter
Peanut oil
Mixed nuts
Peanut flour
Beer nuts
Arachis oil
Artificial nuts
Avoid bakeries and Chinese restaurants. The chance for
cross-contamination is very high in these places.
The following foods often contain peanuts or peanut traces:
Chocolate
Candy
Chili
Granola bars
Sunflower seeds
Tree nuts
Pre-packaged cheese and cracker sandwiches
Food in bulk food bins
Baked goods
Ice cream from ice cream parlors
It is advisable for peanut-allergic individuals to completely avoid tree nuts. The reason for this is B/C they are almost ALWAYS PROCESSED TOGETHER!!!
ANAPHYLAXIS: severe, potentially life-threatening, allergic reaction.
swelling of lips, tongue, throat
shortness of breath, wheezing
hives
nausea, vomiting
drop in blood pressure
loss of consciousness
Anaphylaxis can include any or all of these symptoms.
