Pea-sized Lump Under Daughter's Skin

I am very freaked out right now. I have just discovered a pea sized bump in my 6 year old daughter's hand...in the palm side at the base of her thumb just above where the thumb meets the hand. It can be easily moved around and does not hurt at all but it is very obviously there if you feel for it, and can even be seen a little if she stretched her hand out. You can move it around just by pushing lightly with one finger. There is no color to it, the skin around it looks normal. She said it has been there for a "long time" which freaks me out more. I called the doctor and they can't get her in until next week and all I can do is cry thinking it is something horrible. Has anyone had something similar to this happen to their little one? Does this sound typical of a cancer mass? I am debating just going to urgent care to see the dr. there...

No need to freak out. Cancer mass cannot be moved around. They have irregular shapes too (that is why it is called cancer or "crab" in the Zodiac sign).

I think I know what you are talking about. If it is what I understand it is, it is a totally harmless fatty lump. I have a tiny one on my pinky and my dad had a huge one on his upper back (which he got removed because it was huge).

I'm truly sorry this is happening...the first thing I can tell you is to STOP PANICKING!!! When you freak out and panic - it sends alarm bells off in kids and makes them freak out...before you know it - it will be bedlam..

I understand your panic...I really do...my son's EYEBALL hurts..Johns Hopkins cannot find ANYTHING WRONG with his EYE or EYEBALL..Am I concerned? Heck yeah? Am I freaking out over it? Nope. My son is not seeing the stress it's causing me of NOT KNOWING...he has an MRI next week (FINALLY)...but my point is - he is not freaking out because I am not freaking out.

It could be something as easy as a cyst..she could've had a splinter that she didn't know about that her body just took in and encapsulated it - that's why it doesn't hurt and that's why you can move it.

Take a deep breath - let it out slowly....DO NOT take her to an urgent care doctor...wait to see the doctor next week....it doesn't hurt her, she is not losing mobility and it hasn't changed shape or size...calm down...if I were standing in front of you - I would tell you to look at my eyes and breath - slowly in and out...it will be okay...

Most likely it is nothing to worry about - but if you are going to be a mess until next week when the Dr. can see you then I think you should go to the urgent care.

I used to get lumps like this at the base of my middle finger on my palm side. Same thing, the skin was normal, you could move it a bit with no pain etc... It seemed to come and go, and I seemed to never link it to anything that caused it. One day it went away and it's never returned in the last 14 years. I asked a doctor once what it could have been (it was gone at this point) and they said sometimes tissue can build up and causes a knot of sort then slowly works it's way loose again.

I'll bet a $100 that your child is just fine. Unless she is experiencing other symptoms that seem off that could signal cancer, I wouldn't worry too much at all. Is she eating ok? Any pain in her body? Coloring in her face ok? Bowel movements normal? Sleeping patters normal? etc... if she isn't bothered and seems fine, you can calm down until she is seen next week:)

It could be as simple as a cyst, a non cancerous tumor or as serious as a cancer mass. My husband has those (he had them removed, not cancerous) and so does my 3 year old (a cyst in his back). First, calm down, not only for your own nerves but for the sake of your child, who shouldn't be seeing you cry and worry over something like this right now. It could only make her stress and be scared.

If taking her to urgent care will help settle your nerves, then go ahead and do it, though I would recommend to wait a week for the Dr appointment. Since the size/placement of the lump has been stable for a while, it is likely not going to matter much if you wait a few days..

I had a lump in my breast once. When I saw the specialist, they said a good rule of thumb for benign tumor vs cancerous tumors is the movement test. If you can move it around and squeeze it a little, then it's likely benign. Cancerous tumors will be like rocks.

All will be okay with your daughter, I'm sure.

My son has several of these and the doc says they are fine, just cysts. Kep your appt with the doc so they can be sure. I really understand your concern though because they freaked me out too!

It's most likely just a fluid-filled cyst and not anything to worry about. Try not to worry about it. On the very off chance that it is something serious, a week won't make much difference especially if it has been there for awhile and not changed much. Did you just call and make an appointment or did you leave a message for the nurse/doctor? If you can leave a message for the nurse or doctor they may be able to reassure you or if they are concerned work you into the schedule sooner. Urgent care is also a great option just to set your mind at ease.

Robyn,
Don't freak out until you have a reason too! I no easier said than done but im with the other mamas, im pretty sure its nothing. My son was born with pea size a ball behind each ear and I had a major flip out. It was nothing and he's almost 15 and still has them. I have a knot above my right ankle that sounds just like that but its big! I was told its a cyst and nothing was ever done to it. Take a deep breath!

I had something exactly like that when I was a kid - twice.
It felt like a hard little pea sized marble rolling around under my skin on the palm/thumb area of my left hand.
I could move it around several inches in several directions.
Back then (in the 70's) the procedure was to get it removed at the hospital and have a biopsy.
(I still have the scars from the stitches on my thumb.)
Both times it was a benign cyst.
They figure it might be from when my hand got slammed in a car door once when I was a toddler.
The doctor said I was just a lumpy kid (I had a cyst removed from my cheek a different time, too).
You've got to have it checked out to be sure - they don't know what it is until they get it out.
Try not to worry.
It could be a lot of things that are harmless and easily resolved.

My daughter had the same thing,, it was a ganglion cyst on the inside of her wrist right below the thumb. Some are filled with a thick gel, and some are chalky. We went to the Dr and he tried to suck out the gell with a syringe and there wasnt much. He figured it was the chalky kind and just left it. Sure enough, she was playing games in school a few weeks later, and hit it on a desk and broke the chalk up. It didnt hurt more than if shed just hit her hand on the desk, but it made it go away and its never come back. I had one on the back of my wrist and it started to interfere with bending my wrist. I was about ready to see a Dr about it when I accidently hit it on a door and broke it up. It went away, but every now and then it comes back. I usually end up hitting it on something again. Havent seen it for about 6 years now.

I had this as a kid too and it was completely harmless! Google ganglion cyst. I had it for years and years but eventually it went away. Cancer can not be easily moved around BTW. Also, your docs office probably already suspects something harmless or they would have taken your daughter immediately. It has been my experience that docs do not mess around with lumps in kids. My daughter had a lump on her neck and they had me bring her right to the office. I was really freaking out. Then the doc looked at it and went and got another doc to look at it....then I was beside myself...turned out it was a fatty tissue tumor (lipoma). It is completely harmless but we did have it removed. Good luck.

I would bet there's about a 90% chance it's a ganglion cyst. Totally harmless, NON-cancerous, and doesn't spread. Completely benign...treatment depends on a couple of different factors. I think you're fine to wait for your appointment next week, and take comfort in the fact that it's more than likely nothing at all. :)
