I personally do not have this problem but a teacher at school had her first child last March w/invetro and got pregnant on her own 6 months later. So I'm guessing what you hear could be true.

Hi I am 30 years old and had my first son 7 months ago. I had to use fertility shots to achieve pregnancy the first time. We had four IUI's and the last one took with a healthy dose of hormone shots. As many of you know with PCOS I produce eggs and ovulate, the eggs just are not mature enough to be fertilized on their own. So the shots help make the eggs reach maturity allowing for fertilization.
My question is how many of you out there with PCOS got pregnant with a subsequent child without having to use fertility drugs. I have heard that it is easier after your first birth to conceive and I am wondering how true that is. My periods are 6 to 7 weeks apart right now and my husband and I would like to have another child or maybe even two. I would like to conceive on my own without having to go through all the infertility stuff again. Is the window for that happening small or did any of you wait a year or two before having another child without firtility assistance? Any info would be outstanding!

L.,
I have PCOS, and felt compelled to respond to your post. First, let me say that it's good that you've at least been diagnosed. When my husband and I tried to get pregnant with our first child, we had difficulty. After trying for 9 mos, I went to the OB, who promptly told me that I did not have PCOS. I even asked about it specifically. I went on Clomid and got pregnant after 8 cycles.
Then when it came time to try for a second baby, I went back to the OB and got on Clomid again. After 4 cycles on that, they sent me to an infertility doctor. He immediately told me my diagnosis and my options. I wanted a baby badly, so I went straight to injectibles. After one cycle of that, I knew there had to be another way.
So, I went on metformin and took it everyday for 9 mos. I still tracked my cycles, temping and all. Eventually they got regular and I got pregnant! So I think there is hope for having a baby without all the medications, even with PCOS. But sometimes it does take a while. Best of luck to you! (Sorry for the novel...)

I had to use meds to get my first. I had the same problem as you. I have been off BC sence aug and i still havent ended up preg. My son is two now and if i am not preg bu june will start taking clomid(spelling) and the shots again, but i waited for other reasons, but doctor said i should have tried right after. I just hope this time i dont end up with twins, but a possibility that could happen when you take fertitiy meds.My advice is to try, I have a friend that took med the first time got of BC and got preg. in a month so it depends on you body.
good luck

I also had to have help. My problem is that I don't ovulate at all. I can go years without having a period. I had to use hormone shots myself to concieve, and I got lucky... I had twins. I wanted another but didn't want to use fertility assistance either. By luck, I got pregnant with my littlest while going on and off of birth control. It was a huge shock but I couldn't have been happier. We did it on our own! It is easier to concieve after you've been pregnant and the window isn't just a few months. It's always there because your body has had the experience once and it is more likely to do it again than having never had the experience before. However, if this is very important and you don't want to wait and take your chances and the disappointment, then I would start over again with the fertility. You can always back off again after you have your next, and then try to let nature take it's course. Good luck!
Hi L.,
I too have/had PCOS. We had to go through some minor fertility treatment to get pregnant with our son. I was on birth control pills for 8 months after my son's birth, and quit taking them because of money, and found out I was pregnant with our daughter the VERY NEXT MONTH. We figured we'd have to go through fertility treatment to get pregnant again, but... SURPRISE, we didn't. lol. They say that it takes your body 2 years to FULLY recover from pregnancy. You might talk to your OB about what his/her recomendation is.
I've heard of people taking birth conrol pills during a break and the change in the hormones when you stop taking them triggers ovulation.
Don't be discouraged though, because I was able to concieve naturally the 2nd time around. My son was 9 months old when we found out I was pregnant again (as I said earlier), so my little ones are 16 months apart. lol.
Good luck! And if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to message me anytime. :)
I am 35 and was diagnosed with PCOS when i was trying to concieve when i was 30. I had to take Metformin in order to get pregnant with my first. I found out i was pregnant when I was 32. My daughter was born completely healthy in Aug of 2007. I have not taken any meds since. I just found out that I am pregnant again... Due Feb 2011... without any help what so ever. Its really early in the pregnancy and i'm worried about miscarriage... so i will be talking to my dr about if i need to get back on meds or not.
My neighbor went through this similar situation...they got quickly right after the first one, as the doc said happens often and she ended up with a miscarriage. They did, a year later, get pregnant again without aid. Although, that's all I can help with. I do not know much else about it. Sorry.
