Party Activities for 3 Year Olds

Hi Moms,

I was wondering if anyone had ideas for low-key party activities for a 3 year old's birthday party. I figure the kids might fight over toys if the party is totally unstructured, but I don't want to plan anything with a lot of rules because the little people involved are 2 or 3 years old. We will probably only have 3 or 4 little ones, so it should be a managable group.

Many thanks!
L.

Hey, L.!

My mom, Nattie, owns a creative arts center on the Westbank Expressway and is a professional children's entertainer and a teacher with Jefferson Parish schools. She has all kinds of fun ideas, especially for the younger kids. Please feel free to contact me at ###-###-#### or Nattie at ###-###-####.

Mine our 3 and 4 and love duck duck goose, follow the leader, finger painting (their fav this time of year is using their hand and foot prints to make a reindeer, put each handprint at the top of one foot and then add a face), trace their hands on a large sheet of paper or poster board and let them color it or decorate it with different color scraps of paper.
HOpe this was helpful!!!!!!!!

For my 3 year old daughter's birthday I frosted cupcakes and bought different decorations and let the kids decorate their own cupcakes. We also bought plain brown paper bags with handles and let the kids decorated those as well for use as containers for the treats from the Pinata.
Good Luck, T.

Last year for my two year old's birthday I took a long piece of brown butcher paper and layed it out on a fence, gave them each a pie tin of fingerpaint, and just watched! It was so much fun... Her birthday is in June tho- so it was warm and they were in their swimsuits- so we just hosed off the mess. Kids love new crayons and markers- so print off a cute coloring sheet and let them color with the "big Kid" markers. This year for my daughters preschool Christmas party I am reading the story the "Littlest Elf" and then giving them coloring sheets to color about the story- (she's three) I'm also a big fan of stickers- so paper, markers, and stickers... what else would any three year old want?
PS- You can also make cupcakes and let them decorate their own before they eat it...again, messy but fun.

my kids are grown but I studied child development and worked with three year old at UT and the one thing that I want to share is to remember that at this age they play side by side and not interactively.

Hey, L.,
We just had a 3 year old b-day party. One thing we did was have already iced cupcakes (in place of a cake) and let the little ones decorate their own. They sseemed to enjoy that. Also, we had a simple craft of decorating crowns (my daughter is into the princess thing) with those foam stickers, regular stickers, markers, etc. Then, they could take them home as a party favor.
Good luck!

My son just turned three, and we just had a family party with his cousins. All the kids just ran around the house playing with the toys for a while; then we sang Happy Birthday and had cake and ice cream; then my son opened his presents. Then all the kids played with the new toys. Yes, they might squabble a bit, but it'll just be a few kids, so it won't be too bad. Remember that all of your toys will be new to the other kids, so they'll probably have plenty of "new" toys to choose from. It can take as long or as short as you'd like. I think this would make things go more smoothly than trying to corral four 3 year olds into a single activity.
